“What about personal responsibility, though?”
The boy had not raised his hand. He’d simply blurted the question out. Corrine didn’t remember him saying anything in class before that point, and wasn’t sure of his name, but she didn’t care about that or his question. She had other things on her mind, primarily the heavy, sick feeling in her stomach that she’d had since she woke up that morning next to Brian.
Dr. Carson made a brief hand gesture. “Well, why don’t you elaborate?” he suggested. “Tell us what you think personal responsibility has to do with it.”
“Well, I mean, the way you’re describing it, it’s like people are robots,” the boy said. “Like, if I get exposed to something enough, my brain just automatically develops an addiction, and then I automatically keep seeking it out. But like, if that’s true, then how are people responsible for their own behavior? Shouldn’t people have the willpower to resist it?”
Dr. Carson looked out over the class. “Well, does anyone have a response to Matt’s question?” he asked. There was silence. He smiled and nodded. “I figured it was worth a shot. Well, Matt, to your question, I suppose I’d raise another question. Where are you?”
