Break time! Finally! Intercity routes drag, especially during the middle of the day when there’s no one really travelling except those who do so for the sake of something to do (some variety of free travel pass.) Over an hour today so off to the chippy I go, I’ve promised to meet up with JJ in the canteen with fish and chips and damn that boy can eat so I opt for two large haddock and chips.
Much to my surprise as I reach the canteen door JJ is coming the other way, a sickly shade of green and a sour expression “I’m going home, I’ll have to owe you this one” and continued walking. Oh well guess Rick will get his share, although best not let his wife know!
Making my way through the canteen I spot JJ’s trainee, shit I forgot he was mentoring, oh well she looks like she needs the company. I plop down my bag and the lunch and give her a smile “everything okay?” she looks up at me almost in tears “That’s four buddies now!” This girl wasn’t having any luck, passed her test two weeks ago and every mentor she’s assigned gets sick within a day or two. “What are you doing to them, Polish cooties or something?” I grin but the humour doesn’t translate.
