The warm water felt amazing as it ran down my tired aching body. 10 hours on my feet today and nearly 50 this week. The low pay and stingy tips were never worth the torment, but at least I had a roof over my head. Things were better here in the shower where the soothing streams of water could whisk away all the sweat and grime. I stood there a while, the shampoo was long gone from my hair but I was still unwilling to move.
I just hung my head down and watched the flow of water flow over me. It dripped in streamers from my long black hair, trickled down my legs, meandering back and forth like a small brook until it reached the shower floor and pooled around my aching and blistered feet. I could have stayed there another hour, but the water was slowly starting to turn cold. My old cheap water heater had exhausted its supply of happiness it seems, so I figured it was time to leave while some of the warmth still lingered on me.
