“You see, sweetie? This place is just as beautiful as the pictures made it look, you were worried about nothing,” I told my son, Simon, gleefully.
We’d booked a little week-long getaway at a secluded cabin in the woods upstate, and I knew it would be just what both of us needed. I’ve been in a serious funk ever since my asshole ex husband left me-or I suppose us-last year. That asshole left a lot for me to regret, but it was all worth it for my son, I just wished we’d’ had more children. Simon has seemed really low lately, too, and I’ve thought perhaps it has been a delayed reaction to his father leaving.
“Yeah, Mom,” he said with half a smile. “It looks great.”
He would be leaving to go off to college soon, which was still a weird thought for me, and I thought a nice, cozy little vacation with just the two of us would be a fantastic idea. My son was all grown up now, an adult, a man. Almost nineteen years old, and he’d grown into such a handsome young man. He was smart, responsible, thoughtful, everything a mother could want her son to be. And years of basketball practice had him in great shape.
