Kim Patel wasn’t sure what she had been expecting when the package finally arrived. It only occurred to her as she opened the box that the advertisements never actually showed what the machine looked like, she’d simply nodded along absently to the pitch from the commercials. It was the reviews that won her over, accounts of people whose lives had been saved by the helmet. There was still a chance it was a scam or just wouldn’t work, but with subliminal hypnotic viruses popping up across the internet Kim was willing to give anything a try if it could keep her safe.
The enormous silver contraption resembled a device from a science fiction film, something sinister a mad scientist would use. Untangling the webs of wires and sensors took a solid minute and another four minutes to get everything hooked up along her neck and chest, the tiny white sensor pads standing out clearly on her smooth dark skin. A quick glance in the mirror confirmed her suspicion: that she appeared absolutely ridiculous in the helmet.
