Work was being done to our house a couple of weeks ago. My wife had her eye on one member of the crew that was doing the work. She made little jokes about how I’d better be glad he never came to the house alone. She’d make a face and use a tone to make sure I knew she was joking.
It turns out she wasn’t. One day, right as the job was finishing up, this guy showed up at the house alone. It looked like he was doing some cleanup work. We had thought they were done and were getting mad about the mess they’d left behind. They must have just fallen behind, because my wife’s favorite member of the crew was here to take care of it.
I saw him outside the kitchen window and told my wife she had one last chance to check this guy out. I took the joke further and said, “You told me I was in trouble if he showed up alone” with a joking look on my face.
She said she wasn’t kidding and that now I was lucky that I was home due to the pandemic. She was still joking. I thought.
