Zoe laid on her bed in her underwear, halfway paying attention to the travel documentary streaming on her laptop — the host was busy eating street food in Southeast Asia, it was nothing groundbreaking — while at the same time flipping through anime tags on Tumblr on her phone, when her reverie was interrupted by a phone call. “Mom” the screen glared.
Zoe’s thumb hesitated over the ‘reject’ button before she sighed and let her conscience get the better of her.
“Hi, Mom,” she said, grimacing as she answered the call.
“Zoe, dear, what took you so long to answer? What are you busy doing? You don’t have any time for your mother?” Her mom started in immediately.
“Just watching tv, Mom,” she said, letting her disinterest echo in her tone.
“Shouldn’t you be studying?”
Zoe rolled her eyes. “What did you call about, Mom?”
“Why do I have to call about things? Why can’t I just be calling to talk? I just miss my little sweetheart!”
“I was just visiting you two days ago, Mom, for, like, two whole weeks.” Zoe pushed her glasses back up. “We talked then.”
