One of my best friends was graduating from their master’s program and was having a party to celebrate afterward. A small group of us went to dinner and a bunch more people were due to meet up with us afterward at a fun dance bar elsewhere in the city. One of the friends that came to dinner was a coworker of my friend who had a slim figure, long curly blonde hair, and a great smile. I’ll call her Amy for the sake of the story and I’ll call my friend Fiona.
In case this detail matters later in the story, Fiona is a lesbian with a long term partner. I assumed, because I am an idiot, that Amy was also a lesbian when I first met her. Likewise, I think that Amy assumed I was gay when she met me, because literally everyone else at the party was; save for the two of us. This meant that there was no flirting or even contemplation of hooking up at any stage. Just people being people — which is honestly the best.
