Andrew had always seen the lights and colors and symbols, he just didn’t know what they were. Actually, at first, he assumed everybody saw them. He realized no one else did when the trips to pediatric ophthalmologists started. He was examined by the best and tested by the brightest, but not one of the doctors and scientists could even understand what he was describing, let alone cure it.
One of the specialists gave him an out though. He suggested to his parents that perhaps Andrew would outgrow it. That’s what he decided to do. He didn’t like lying to his parents, but he decided it was ok when he saw how relieved they were. His affliction disappeared as mysteriously as it had begun.
Andrew was intrigued by the things he saw. He noticed subtle changes between members of a group of objects. If he looked at a bag of oranges, for example, some had more vibrant orange highlight colors. If he selected one of those it’s flavor was more intense than one of the paler fruits. There was a little thing that looked like half a zipper assigned to each orange. Some of the teeth on each zipper stuck up higher than the others. The ones with more of the higher teeth were sweeter. The bigger the little droplet drawn next to the orange, the juicer.
