My boss approached me with a request. He had a job offer and bid for a contract that would last several months renovating a non-profit veterinary office. The catch was it was entirely after hours work. I had the most experience working alone and the most flexible schedule so I agreed.
The office was still operating at lessened scheduling, mostly prioritizing emergency calls out of a trailer fitted out as a mobile exam and surgical room.
After hours the Vet, Mikayla, would work late in her office. Her husband would occasionally stop by right at closing time then leave. Her mother would also stop in at times to help do little tasks for a few hours then head out. Invariably, after 8 or so towards 1 or 2 in the morning it would be just Mikayla and me working throughout the building. After a week or so we started taking small breaks from our work to chat together.
It started as talking about our jobs, or progress on the office. But we quickly found we had a lot in common outside of work and it evolved into one of us going out to grab dinner and then we would eat together in the office.
