“We’ve made God a man because it reinforces – in both overt and subtle ways – the male-dominated hierarchy that we have constructed in our societies.
Perhaps the assignment of a gender or sex to God is simply that we associate maleness with power in many of our societies and because God is the most powerful, he must be male. I’m sure you can all see the logical fallacy in that reasoning.
A person has to wonder: for a being who is omnipotent and omniscient and who apparently doesn’t have a partner, what need would they have for a sex or gender? If his sex/maleness, is biological, are we saying that God is biological? And if he isn’t biological and it is just the imposition of a gender over a non-biological entity, what possible purpose could that serve?
Class dismissed.”
As he packed up his lecture notes he reflected. It had gone well. Perhaps his best class on this particular subject. A few students acknowledged him as they went by and he returned their greetings. Notes organized, classroom empty, he turned to leave.
