Quinn snapped her head from side to side, searching the dark for signs of movement. Her heart drummed in her ears. She tried to calm her heavy breathing listening closer to the sound of the woods. She rubbed her hands over her arms hoping to warm herself a little as the cold nipped at her bare body. Twigs and leaves tangled into her long black hair. Her breath was visible even in the dull moon light. Satisfied she had lost her pursuer, Quinn carefully crept through the trees. Branches scratched at her tender skin and, roots and rocks tore at her feet no matter how carefully she picked her footing.
Snap. Something broke a twig near by. Quinn hurried over to a fallen tree and ducked down behind hit. Her heart started to drum once again. The adrenaline coursed through her as she peaked over the tree. Another snap. She shot down curled up in a ball. She held her breath and listened. The sound of a near by stream was all she could hear but she kept holding her breath. Snap. Something was getting closer. She couldn’t tell where to was coming from. She squeezed her eyes shut in a child like hope that if she couldn’t see them, they couldn’t see her. The seconds she waited felt like hours, her lungs screamed for release but she waited and waited.
