When Ty entered the barn, Amy was busy fiddling with the straps on Spartan, and she didn’t even notice him enter.
“Amy,” he said, and she nearly dropped the rope she was holding.
“What do you want?” she said, her voice dripping with acid. She turned back to the horse.
“Amy, listen, please,” he said, grabbing her by the arm. Finally, she met his eyes, and he saw that they were filled with tears. “I don’t want us to fight anymore.”
“I don’t either,” she said. “But I can’t forgive you after what you did with Blair.”
“I know, I know,” Ty said, and he felt his voice catch in his throat. “I’m so, so sorry. But I can’t live without you.”
But Amy was already shaking her head. “I can’t ever trust you again.”
Ty sighed, then he tried the last thing he could think of. He got on his knees and took Amy’s hand into his. “Please,” he said. “I’ll do anything. Punish me, shout at me, hit me. Whatever you want. I can’t lose you.”
Amy was quiet for a long time, and when next she spoke, it was only a whisper. “Anything?”
