This was a long time ago. During The War. Unlike most men, I hadn’t left town yet, but I needed to go join the fight. I made sure the town would be in good hands before I packed a knapsack and headed to the city.
It was a little more than a day’s journey, so I figured to stop by the Greene farm to rest for the night. Farmer Greene was lost in the war and presumed dead. I’d heard his only son was joining the army as well.
It wasn’t quite dusk when I arrived at the farmhouse. Maddie Greene (F40) greeted me (M40) warmly. It turns out that Bobby had already left for the city the day before. That left Maddie and her three daughters to see to the farm. Over tea I said that I wished there was something I could do.
Maddie walked to the window to make sure her girls were still out in the fields. “But there is something you can do, Mayor,” she said, sitting down and putting her hands on mine.
“Anything, Maddie.”
