It was nearing the end of the night. I’ve had a few beers in me, and a celebratory shot for the birthday girl. Dinner was light yet filling. Chicken, bacon wrapped asparagus, and sweet potatoes. Simple and delicious. The first floor bathroom was regularly occupied from everyone imbibing a bit too much. A standard birthday dinner with my husbands family, it’s a shame he often missed these gatherings due to work. I head upstairs to pee and take a minute to reflect. It’s rare that family get togethers go so smoothly for most people. How lucky am I to marry into a family that is so like-minded and laid back. Drinks all around, silly banter, intellectual conversation. I pee, wash up and linger a minute in the bathroom, make sure there’s no food in my teeth, and check the time. 9:51. It was getting late, some would laze on the couches while others headed outside to enjoy a few more drinks. The best part of any night; taking the time to enjoy a gathering the way you want to. I step out of the bathroom and was a bit taken aback by my brother in law standing there. He was waiting I suppose, and probably just taking a mental break. He always sort of startled me, but in a good way. He was incredibly tall, and towered over me as I’m only about 5′ 2″. His voice was so deep that it almost had two tones. The deep bellow, and the strong vibration that emanated as he spoke. A full head of eye-catching red hair and a genuine huge smile always plastered on his face. Interacting with him was always all encompassing. Most people were drawn to him, and he was a natural performer. His presence was always distracting. He effortlessly takes command of a room, a character no doubt.
“Heyyyy!!!” He bellowed out. He pulled me in for a hug. He was a hugger, always friendly and took the time to mingle one on one with people when given the chance. He was a little drunk and obviously enjoying himself.
“Enjoying the evening little miss Eva?”
“Of course!” I blushed a little, I could never help it.
“It’s nice to have you around, you really bring everyone together!”
“Hey, thanks! I love being with you guys. Everyone’s always bound to have a good time!”
“You stickin around for a bit longer?” He asked.
“Probably just a while longer, regular day tomorrow, so I can’t get too crazy.” I said with a bashful smile.
“That’s too bad, everyone was just talking about heading down by the pond and having a bonfire.”
“Awe, that sounds awesome, I really shouldn’t get too carried away though.”
“Oh, come on!” He jested.
“Okay, one more drink, then I should head home.” I complied.
“Alright!” He said with a grin.
