I stepped onto the curb. It was rainy outside, but I had a coat and umbrella, and needed to wait for a moment before taking any more steps. She was in the apartment on the third floor. Her curtains were drawn so I had my moment. My stomach was turning over and around. Where was this night going to go? I checked my phone, seven minutes late, perfect. I took a deep breath despite the fact that my chest felt like it was dissolving. Here goes. I strode to the door and pressed her button.
“Hello? Harry is that you?”
“Yep I’m here.”
“Great! I’ll buzz you in!”
I didn’t respond. I felt as if I was sort of floating. The door made a harsh buzzing noise but I didn’t react to it. Inside the lobby. Up the stairs and at her door.
“Hey! I was worried you might have forgot about tonight!”
“Aren’t I supposed to be fashionably late?”
“Not with someone you actually like spending time with!”
“You assume too much darling, now where are your manners, aren’t you supposed to offer me wine?”
