The light tapping of the rain hitting the windows was hypnotic. It was eleven in the morning, but the normally naturally lit space was still dark. The rain had moved in that morning and it looked like it would stay the rest of the day. It was like a friend who refused to go home after a night of drinking, so they just all sat on the couch together watching the seconds pass by on a rare day that they had off together.
Julie looked over at Matt as his face was illuminated by the phone in his hands. She smiled as she looked at him. He was concentrating on whatever stupid game he had been playing or website he had been browsing all morning. The sound of the television was filling the empty space and neither had wanted to abandon their friend, the rain today. He was in his boxers still and his hair was oily and sticking up in the back from a night of hard sleep. He was overdue for a haircut, so the cow lick that was on the back of his head was sticking up in its familiar way. It was like he was a peacock presenting his plume and she found it adorable.
