I awoke in darkness.
There was sound, though- a rushing, a roaring, a humming. It seemed to change as I listened to it, evading all attempts to nail down what I was hearing. A soft steady rain. Voices in a crowded room. Wind in trees. Traffic on a busy road a block away.
For a moment even my sense of my own body felt fuzzy and uncertain, but as I put my attention on it it came back into focus. Arms, legs, hands, feet. I flexed my fingers and toes; everything seemed to be working as it should.
I spoke aloud, mostly to see if I could:
“There should be light.”
And there was.
A soft white glow came from everywhere and nowhere. There wasn’t much to see, though. My own body, but aside from that just a blank void, without even enough depth to tell how far it stretched. If that even meant anything in this place. It was disconcerting to realize I wasn’t even sure if I was standing on something or just floating in space.
Had I made the light happen? Or was it a coincidence? Or was someone or something watching me and responding to what I asked for?
