Indignant outrage, followed by claims of refusing to back down under the guise of standing for civil liberties… and then eventually running out of muster and caving to whatever is most profitable for those who make the decisions – the same pattern that can be seen again and again, and was exactly the thing that led to many Middle Eastern countries granting American TSA agents jurisdiction to screen passengers in foreign airports for any flights going to the US. The tradeoff being that the electronics ban would then be lifted (returning the lost revenue from business-class customers who were forced to choose other airlines if they wanted to be able to be productive during their flight).
It was only a few weeks after this change that Tahira was flying back home to the States with a few friends after a holiday to Dubai. The screening process had been longer than ever before, but to her surprise, she was actually allowed through fairly quickly unlike almost all of the people of Middle Eastern, South Asian, or African decent that she saw go before her who were put through extensive searches and questioning by overly rude and entitled TSA agents who only spoke English and seemed to expect anyone passing through their gates (in Dubai) to be able to do so perfectly also.
