One of the most intriguing things in life, to me, is how people meet. They meet through family and friends. Meet through being colleagues at work and events. They meet through situations, like at a grocery store when one drops their wallet and the other hands it to them. So many random meetings, so many relationships formed one way or the other. Meeting you online could have just been another one of those, a random meet where two people from different strides of life collide, but this was different. Our goals were exactly the same. We’d made profiles searching for someone with similar tastes that would fulfill something in our lives that we didn’t have.
Our initial contact seemed a bit awkward at first, it always does online if I were honest. It’s so hard to gauge how a text is meant to be read. Sarcastic? Friendly? Comedic? Snarky? Teasing? It’s hard to be careful and still be yourself when you first meet someone in an online forum. Of course, my personal fear is that the person I’ve just met has an ‘online persona’, as I like to call it. A character that they’ve created online for the mere purpose of pretending. Nothing real to life. No actual connection or bond ever being formed, from their side of things. The fear is real and has happened oh so many times.
