I’m the partner in a big city law firm. Our office isn’t like *Mad Men* or anything, but like I think any office there’s a dynamic between the legal assistants and the attorneys. Individuals in both groups have a reputation. Some are known for engaging in frequent dalliances. Some are known for their occasional fling. Some are known for not being in the game at all.
I fall into the last category. I’ve heard it’s something of a topic of discussion among the female staff. It isn’t that I’m crazy hot or something, but I’m nice looking, I’m single, and I’m under 40. Those who are looking to land a lawyer are looking for someone like me. But they’re always disappointed because I don’t flirt and I definitely don’t play. Work is for work and play happens elsewhere.
Women would flirt, and I’d ignore them and redirect the conversation to business. It was fairly routine and most of the staff would eventually figure it out and give up. I regarded it as a minor annoyance when they didn’t give up relatively quickly.
