[Group] We need to talk about the number one sin plaguing this sub [meta]

“I’ve changed the names”

“We’ll call them ‘xxxxx'”

Or just generally putting their “names” in quotation marks.

Nobody gives a shit. Even if you use real names the likelihood anybody will know who you’re talking about or actually put the effort into finding them is so minuscule it’s not worth it.

It detracts from the story, it’s distracting, and 99 times out of 100 names are unnecessary at all.

  1. To be honest i don’t have any problem with that . it shows their respect toward the other people who are in the story.
But yet again some people taking it too for by naming people f or j just one word. That’s distracting as fuck

  2. What I don’t get is why the writer has to say In the first place that names have been changed….just change them anyways and don’t say that you did ya know….like any of us would realize Steve is really Bob and Mary is really Julia . LoL

  3. This is my main issue with Reddit in general. Especially the “We’ll cal her…”. There is no “we”. I’m didn’t go in on this decision. Is there a mouse in your pocket helping you decide? I usually stop reading after any of the above. It pulls focus and is unnecessary.

  4. I’ll comment from the opposing viewpoint as I constantly refer to our pseudonym names in my story. My girlfriend/wife is Chelsea and No, that’s not her real name. Try to remember that every person posting a story here comes from a different background. Few posters are actual writers and fewer still are good at it. Their need to change the name and tell others is because their story is unique to them and they are often telling it for the first time.

As far as I can tell, you don’t write and haven’t posted a story here. For many people trying to summarize an entire experience into a condensed version, while trying to keep the mood and tone right, also while trying to keep from cutting out important moments AND trying to keep the story flowing is difficult.

So I can forgive if the author chose to humanize their partner by giving them fake names or proceed to tell us they changed details. I can personally attest that there are people out there that can’t tell if a person is telling a story to share or telling THEM a story as if they are a part of it. They will go out of their way and find details and search the internet.

  5. I’m convinced if people didn’t at that into the post some readers would freak out about using real names. Then we’d be bitching about that.

  6. Right?! Just write some fucking names. I less respect for those who have to point out that they changed names or use single letters, than grammar errors.

  7. I absolutely loathe the use of letters to differentiate people in a story. Use real or fake I don’t care but I struggle to follow a story when I hear A fucked B with C watching.
