My roommate [M]asturbates in his sleep

I used to live alone; however, last month I decided to move, as the rent was too steep for me. I saw an add for a two room apartment and thought it’d be great.

I moved in and thought it was pretty neat. It’s not a two room apartment, it’s more like a one bedroom with two separate beds. The guy who I was going to share the apartment with seemed like a pretty cool guy, until night came. Every now and then during nights/bed time I would hear grunting and obvious sound of him masturbating (if you’re a guy, I am sure you know that sound). For couple of weeks I kept it to myself and didn’t really do much about it. However, as it was getting more frequent, I would show signs that I am still awake by (fake) coughing and stuff like that. Still, he didn’t stop, until… well, you know, until he was actually done (I assume).

I didn’t want to confront him either, until about a month has passed, as I am still the new guy and still saw it more of it like his house, rather than ours. This kept happening, until around last week from today, and this was when I thought have had enough and decided to confront him. While he was going at it, I decided to turn the light on. I thought he’d stop, but to my surprise he kept going. That’s when I decided to approach him to his bed. He has his eyes closed and was keep masturbating. I poked him and also called out his name (I didn’t yell). He kept going and around that time was when I knew this was getting ridiculous. I just turned off the lights and just went back to my bed.

Is it possible that my roommate is sleepwanking (masturbating in his sleep)? I mean, is that even a thing? Or is it possible that he was so into it, that he didn’t even noticed? To this day, I still haven’t confronted him, as this could be embarrassing and/or a problem that he is dealing with.

What should I do?

  1. I would bring it up. He might not know he does it so maybe bring up noise from the night before, ask if he ever sleep walks or stuff like that. Don’t be blunt but don’t beat around the bush for too long. Maybe say he does it and it makes you feel a bit uncomfortable even bringing it up and that’s why you’ve not said anything till now.

  2. I heard about that one! Apparently there really are people masturbating in their sleep. Google it, this is a known phenomenon. I guess there is not much you can do about it though… Maybe move to another room if it disturbing to you?
