It had taken them a long time to reach this far out into the galactic north, a fact further complicated by the need to remain in cryo slumber for a portion of the journey.

The flicker zone, it was an apt name. The very outer edges of the astronomicon where the ‘projections’ at its limits wax and wane by about a hundred light years, makes travel to the very frontiers in any direction a dangerous undertaking, even moreso with the galactic north and northeast, a region beset by vicious temporal storms within the warp that even gellar fields cannot fully shield against on their own, hence the need for cryogenic stasis when travelling through these areas.

He glanced at the hololithic projection before him, the stellar constellations where the so called Gamenor Frontier presented themselves, a collection of about sixty star systems, grouped locally into clusters between 5 to 12 stars each became highlighted. Dominated mostly by old Rogue Trader houses that had fled here with imperial refugees and outcasts during the 36th millenium.

There was not much more information for him than this. When their ship had docked at the equally obscure Fort Portis Stellar Outposts, all the information they could really glean from local navigators and merchants was that Gamenor was a nightmare to reach due to the conditions within warpspace, and that they should recruit local expertise from the frontier navigators before attempting the journey at all.

Most servants of the throne would not bother to attempt such a journey, let alone with just vague symbols thrown out by the emperors tarot.

But he had.

Why.

His train of thought was interrupted by his chambers door opening, an immaculately dressed officer of the vessel he was now on presented himself, he stood silently at first, not sure how to proceed.

“When you are ready first officer…” His gentle voice had a way of dissipating tension when needed.

“We have arrived in orbit above the planetary satellite, they have not detected us and we will remain at current distance. Sensors indicate a large orbital dock with what appears to be multitudes of non military class vessels in anchor, with occasional new arrivals. We are ready to proceed as you order.”

He closed down his computator and stood up, he pushed a small button on his desk, His chambers window shutters raised and the jungle covered moon below shone in its starlight.

“I have prepared a briefing, gather up the senior staff and ensure that the 11th Vanguards are fully awake and prepared for deployment when I need them.”

He gently clutched the deck of tarot cards that bought him to this place, knowing that this far out, they would no longer be of any use.”

“By your command…Inquisitor Prince.”

The new arrival anchored itself just outside of range of the moons deployed sensors, it was a small vessel, easily able to blend in with the numerous merchant vessels that docked in orbit if it needed, but these newcomers had not come here to sample the Duke Seruzon’s ‘hospitality’, for now they were quite content to be the voyeurs, watching and waiting at the back.

Njali and the other women in her group continued their sparring in the training area, their hololithic ‘weapons gliding through the air as they practiced their ‘manouvers’, in truth it was just a display, a performance being rehearsed for the event tonight. Sednia had been assigned her sparring partner, and so far she had only ‘won’ one out of their three fights.

For the first time since arriving here however, Njali and the others had found themselves laughing and jibing amongst themselves, bonding within the group had been happening discreetly over the past few weeks, under an atmosphere of depression and anger at their circumstances. But out here, sparring with one another, the mood finally seemed to lighten slightly, It almost seemed like being back with their kithids. Several teased one another and joked amongst themselves.

“How is it are you winning all the time when you flip your main weapon like a youngling fresh off the teat?!” Brunvi grinned at Njali, her face giving of a false ‘I’m sweet’ look.

“I’m just as amazed at how you are able to backflip so much?! Considering How large and fleshy your rear asset is!”

“Its ok,” Sednia chimed in ” We all know that the Rustwalkers can’t really handle actual weapons all that well, these ones are afterall just holograms!”

The three women continued to banter with each other, Njali couldn’t remember the last time she felt so comfortable and at ease, she looked out at the other groups in the training area, they were all using similar holo-bladed weapons in their mock fights. Whenever a blade made contact with a part of their bodies, it activated tiny sensors embedded in their skins, a slight shock was administered to their muscle and some kind of ‘scoring board’ kept tally of the strikes at the far end of the ground.

The Ymiri had been allowed to wear some light garments for the training session, but had been told that during the ‘event’ being held they would be naked and would be expected to follow and perform according to the ‘rehearsals’ they were now having.

Brunvi continued looking out at the sparring groups, her mind seemed to wander.

“How long can this keep going on for?!” She seemed to be asking herself the question more than to the others.

“I’m starting to wonder if the jungles outside are a more viable option at this point!” Sednia replied.

“No! I’m not just going to throw in the rag just yet!” Njali looked over at the others, “We are literally the children of the old consortium!, there has to be a way to crack into the tech of this place!”

“That might not be the main problem in itself.” Brunvi replied, “The aquilas are notorious for their crappy technology, The main issue for us is these freggin drugs! We cant do anything with the shit they keep pumping into us like this!”

Sednia turned to Brunvi “There might be a way around it, Keep this to yourself for now, but one of the Women in my group thinks that some of the plant life that grows around the fences here seems to interfere with the crap in our systems briefly.”

“How did she figure that out!”

“The open area that leads out from our living quarters, apparently her homeworld isn’t that different from the environment of this place, she tasted some of the local plantlife growing in the lounge area and her old kithid implants allowed her to monitor how it effected her.”

“This could be what we have been waiting for!” Njali got a little excited “But which of the stuff that growing outside our stable is it?”

“Look for the leaves with the blue patterns running down the center, but don’t go picking it too much yet! We don’t want to let on that we have something to the security!”

The three discussed further, it seemed that finally a plan was starting to form. Njali and the others went back to sparring, a new confidence now infused them.

Sednia won the next matchup.
