I twirled my glass slowly, hearing the sounds of ice clinking around in their pool of whiskey. Sitting alone at this bar, I can feel my face getting hot with anxiety and embarrassment. Why did I come here? What was I thinking? This pandemic has really salted my game- I can barely look attractive people in the eye anymore.
Okay Ivy, focus. You’re prepared, I think to myself. I glance down at my green slip dress that I paired with thin black stilettos, topped off with my classic leather jacket. Brushing my dark bangs out of my face, I see my reflection through the booze bottles in the back bar wall. I look good. It’s undeniable.
Suddenly feeling more confident, my eyes dart across the bar, searching for a soul to play with. No one is really catching my attention and I’m about to give up when out of nowhere, I see him. He has green eyes and dark, somewhat shaggy hair, along with a nice, full beard to match the perfectly-unkempt look. He’s wearing a dress shirt tucked in to expose narrow hips, with his sleeves rolled up to show his hairy, strong arms. His gaze meets mine as he takes my temperature. He shyly smiles from the corner of his mouth. I return the smile casually, not too forward. More confident now, he nods slightly and tips his drink at me from afar.
As I finish my drink, I look up to see he has made his way across the bar to me. We make our introductions and shake hands. As our palms met, I felt a twinge of electricity through my body. His name was James and he was a freelance artist and photographer. We bought each other drinks as he showed me photos of his work and asked me questions about mine. As I discussed my research with him, he looked pensively and attentively into my eyes, asking questions all the while.
As time went on, I was barely aware of the bar around me- the clinking of glasses, the scent of red wine, the people floating past in the dim light- it all faded away.
Growing warm, I peeled off my jacket, exposing my strong shoulders.
“I’m really enjoying our time together tonight, Ivy” said James, while grazing my collarbone slowly and gently with two fingers. Feeling the whiskey a little, I drank in this touch. Closing my eyes briefly in yearning, I mustered up a “me too” in response. He put his left hand on the inside of my knee and leaned in to kiss me. Running his other large hand along my jawline and through my hair, he kissed me with the same quiet longing I had for him. He pulled away, whispering in my ear, “I can think of how to make this night even more enjoyable” he breathed as his left hand glided up the inside of my thigh. He pulled away and finished his drink, so as to not draw suspicion, never breaking eye contact with me. I took his hand from my thigh, placed it in mine, and whispered: “follow me.”
