I grew up literally unable to have sex on a normal bed, like normal people. In the Middle East, finding space for intimacy as an unmarried girl was nearly impossible. You’re not allowed to rent an apartment or a hotel room without a marriage contract – and forget about doing it in each other’s bedrooms. I can’t think of a single Middle Eastern parent who would have been okay with leaving their son or daughter alone in a bedroom with a love interest. At least not in my social circles.

One way or another, I had to fuck. And I had no choice but to find ways to do so in public spaces. I became very familiar with specific nooks and crannies around town, or in the building where I lived. Places where nobody would neither see nor suspect me. For example, there was an abandoned sand lot not far from where I lived and a short distance away from a major intersection. When I say major, I do not mean this to be an exaggeration. Many cities in the Middle East are coastal, and as such, have a main road or highway along the shoreline – often called the “Corniche”. Almost every Corniche in the Middle East is a prime thoroughfare that extends across the length of the city, and therefore receives a lot of traffic. This abandoned sand lot was about the size of a whole block, and faced a few high-rise residential buildings overlooking the Corniche. It was boxed in on three sides by quiet roads, and an abandoned walled structure on its fourth. It served as a parking lot, either to visit people nearby, or to take a stroll on the pedestrian walkways that stretched across the Corniche.

I used it to have sex in cars.

It was convenient: not far from where I lived, and a detour-less stop on my way home. Very easy to ask a guy to just park his car there before he was dropping me off. Depending on who I was taking to my special abandoned lot, I would either get right down to business, or entertain a conversation and cigarette before making my move.
