When Dan got home and got Cale to bed he went to his room to see Dawn.
“Hey,” he said. “How are you doing?”
“I’m ok,” she said. She looked at her husband. “Daniel, I want to ask you to do something for me.”
“Sure, anything,” Dan said.
“I want you to promise me that after I’m gone you’ll re-marry,” Dawn said, with a serious look on his face.
“Dawn, you’re not going to….” started Dan.
“Daniel, you know just as well as I do that it’s only a matter of time.”
Dan looked at his wife, tears starting in his eyes. Dawn put her hand on his face. He kissed her.
“I love you,” Dan said.
“I love you too,” said Dawn.
2 weeks after graduation, Brooke was all moved into Dan and Dawn’s place. She helped take care of Dawn and Cale.
One day Brooke was in taking care of Dawn, moving her around so she wouldn’t get bed sores.
“Brooke, promise me you’ll take care of my family. Take care of Dan and my little boy,” Dawn said. Brooke stopped and looked at her.
“Don’t talk like that,” said Brooke. “You’re going to be fine. You’re going to make it.”
Dawn looked at her.
“No, I’m not. You and I both know that. And so does Dan, obviously,” Dawn said looking at Brooke’s belly. Brooke gasped and tried to keep her tears in.
“He told you,” Brooke said.
“No,” said Dawn. “It’s not that hard to figure out. The way he looks at you. He looks at me like that.”
“I’m so sorry,” Brooke said, starting to cry.
“It’s ok,” said Dawn.
“No it’s not. We did something awful,” said Brooke.
“And now have something amazing on the way,” said Dawn. “I don’t want you to feel bad about it. I want you to get over it. I have. I know if Dan had any inkling I was going to make it, he would have never done it. And if he would have, it would have happened once not three times.”
Brooke looked at her.
“He talks in his sleep,” Dawn said with a small smile. “Come here.”
Brooke went over to her. Dawn wiped her tears away.
“I love you Brooke. You’ve been here for my family and taken care of me and Cale. And Dan has been here and given up so much. He deserves to be happy when I’m gone.”
Brooke hugged Dawn.
“Everything is going to be fine,” said Dawn. Brooke smiled and left Dawn to rest. That night Dan and Brooke sat on the couch watching TV after Cale and Dawn had gone to bed. Dan had his arm around Brooke and he put his hand on her tummy to feel the baby kick.
“You know, we haven’t thought of names yet,” said Brooke. Dan looked at her. She put her hand on his and squeezed his hand. He stayed silent. Brooke sighed and kissed his cheek. She got up and went to bed. Dan crawled in next to her and put his arm around her. Brooke got up and walked over to the window.
“What’s wrong?” Dan asked.
“You should be with your wife,” Brooke said. “You have all the time in the world to be with me, if you want to be.”
“I do want to be with you,” Dan said. Brooke turned around. “Come here.”
Brooke walked over to him. He put his hands on the sides of her tummy and kissed it. He got up, kissed her head, and went to be with his wife. Brooke slept better that night knowing Dan was with his wife in her final days.
