I grabbed a shower, got dressed, and made my way down to the nightclub we had co-ordinated with for the night. As the queue snaked down the side of the club, I had the rare luxury of skipping to the front and giving my name to the bouncer. He crossed my name of his list, and judging from the pen marks I could see, it was clear most had already arrived. Entering through the heavy black doors, I was immediately drowned in a sea of techno music and dancing bodies. Towards the back corner of the club, up a flight of stairs, I saw two golden balloons with 3 and 0 hovering above a table of men and women drinking and sharing jokes. As I slowly ascended the steps, a chorus of “Happy Birthday” began, and my two closest friends James and Alex lifted me unsteadily onto their shoulders, parading me proudly and almost cracking my skull open. I was delirious with happiness. I immediately began catching up with everyone who had made it, telling them all about my adventures in Monaco, and hearing how life had been treating them.
I was just making my way to the bar when i saw two hands wave excitedly in my direction. Jane and Alice were making a beeline for me, and nearly knocked me over with a group hug. Both planted a kiss on either cheek and then Jane proceeded to kiss me on the lips passionately for a moment. I could tell from her smile that she was giddy with excitement. It was clear both of them had indulged in a few drinks before making their way here. It wasn’t until I stepped back from our hug that I got a chance to look at them properly. It took me a second to realise it, but they were wearing the same dress. Well almost.
The colours were different; Jane’s white and Alice’s a baby blue, but they both had the same slit that ran up the side of their thighs, and body hugging fabric which showed off their amazing figures.
“You two are matching” I shouted, above the loud din of the nightclub.
Alice cupped her hand around my ear and said slowly “we’ve given this special night of yours a lot of thought Rob”. She moved her head back to look into my eyes, and it wasn’t the playful, flirty look I was used to getting from Alice. Her stare was intense, and it felt like we locked eyes for an eternity.
Before I had a chance to reply, I felt her being dragged away by Jane onto the dance floor. I tried to move my way through the mass of people and follow them, but I had lost them in the crowd. I took my phone out and text the group:
“Where did you guys go?”
There was no answer, and I had a good feeling checking their phones was low on the list of priorities at this point in time.
But at that moment, things didn’t feel rushed. From the photo Alice sent Thursday night, to the talk in the taxi, to the intimate stare we had just shared, I felt things were aligning perfectly. I decided, rather than try to force the issue, I’d let the night play out naturally. I returned to the WhatsApp group to send another message.
“Gonna grab a few quiet drinks next door with Alex and James, enjoy the dance floor you two”.
I wrangled James and Alex from our section upstairs, and cleared a path for the bar next door. We found a quiet corner of the bar and order a few whiskey ginger ales. The conversation hit the normal topics of sport, college memories, and women. Some gentle ribbing about Alice ensued, as they asked how long her and Jane had been an item, and whether they ever let me watch. I felt the urge to fill them in on the whole situation: the confusing signs, the flirtations, the photo, but I decided against it. I saw it as a sort of spell that I might break if I spoke about it, so I kept quiet.
A few drinks later, and talk turned to taxis home, and potential plans for tomorrow. I had waved away Alex’s offer to cancel his taxi and stay drinking with me. I had about half of my drink left, and I told myself I’d give myself the time to finish it and how best to reconnect with the girls. It was about 5 minutes after the boys left that my phone buzzed. A series of messages from Jane into the group chat in quick succession.
Rob, where are you?
We miss you 😢
This bed is super comfy
Alice says to bring back some Prosecco
Get your butt back here
I drained the rest of my drink, paid my bill, and started walking back to the hotel room. Clearly the girls were not ready to let the night end, which was promising. But, having never been in this position, I felt butterflies in my stomach over how to proceed. How do you make the first move? Did I need to pull Jane aside to agree boundaries? How could I do that without killing the excitement of the whole situation? That is, if there was a situation at all.
I arrived at the hotel desk, and asked that a bottle of Prosecco be left outside room 212, and then took the elevator to the 2nd floor. As I slid my card in and opened the door, the room was oddly quiet. I had expected a lively energy, with music blaring and excited drunken talk, but nothing. As I walked past the bathroom, I had a horrible feeling that the two had fallen asleep in the short time since the message. But when the king sized bed came into view, I realised I had nothing to worry about.
