I’m a lecturer at a college here in the west coast USA. This happened a couple weeks ago during the new semester.

Once we were alone he literally refused to look me in the eye. I was pissed as heck but gave him an opportunity to explain himself. He reluctantly told me that he broke up with his girlfriend a week ago (so right around when I was away) and had been “spiralling” (his exact word). In the span of one week since the break up, he explained that he had been fucking the pain away.
