My eyes strained and focused, my breathing slowed. Steady, steady. One heartbeat, two, three, hold… and release.
“Sqeeee!” screeched the feral hog as my aim held true. It dropped where it was. Its neck pierced clear through by my arrow.
“Nice shot!” The Orc next to me whispered. His name was N’aytok, and he’d been my hunting coach these past couple of weeks. I’d grown stronger with practice, and much more accurate. The bow Nalia made for me worked wonders as well. Her skills were far above whoever crafted my old hand-me-down one. I could hit a boar cleanly like this at 50 paces now. 53 actually, as we counted them off this time for reference.
We placed the dead boar by the two we had killed earlier in the day, and watched the sun fall lower in the sky while snacking on some jerky. I was slowly getting used to the fact that Orcs ate a lot of meat, it was one of the many adjustments, and part of me yearned for a nice bowl of soup with leeks and rice.
“Are you enjoying it here with us?” N’aytok asked curiously, “It must be a change for you.”
I looked at him and thought for a minute, “Well I’d rather be free to travel,” I admitted honestly. “But it’s been good, I feel like I’ve learned a lot, and am treated better here than anywhere else I’ve traveled in my time.”
N’aytok nodded and sighed, “I wish I could travel freely too,” he lamented, “But we have to rebuild our home somehow. So many have their hearts set on revenge for the war 20 years ago too. This seemed like a way to help our people out, and travel somewhere at least.”
“Well maybe after the war we can travel somewhere fun together.” I offered, “I’d love to see your homeland too.”
N’aytok chuckled, “maybe ya? Why not, it’d be fun.”
Our snack finished, we grabbed the hogs and began our journey back to camp. This part still tested my stamina, as some of the feral hogs were fairly heavy, and the afternoon heat didn’t help. I was sweating and straining so badly I was almost sure that the scream I heard was just a hallucination.
Then I heard it a second time.
“Hey do you hear that?” I asked N’aytok.
He paused a second, “I think so, it sounded human.”
“It sounded like a woman screaming,” I replied with emphasis. Some of the Orcs were a bit confused by human voices I’d learned. Sometimes I wondered if they even heard the same range of sounds we did. “We should check it out,” I urged, “someone could be in trouble.”
“Isn’t that the human town’s problem?” He replied, seeming a bit miffed at the whole idea.
I rolled my eyes, “They never helped much in the best of times. Besides, you’re out to prove you’re the better side in this war right?”
N’aytok nodded and turned to look at me, it was clear from his expression he understood my point. “Alright, leave the boars here, let’s go.”
We placed our catch on a nearby tree limb and hurried back down the hill into a wooded area. We could hear shouting as we went, several voices were arguing perhaps? It was hard to tell.
As we got closer a homestead came into view. We crept behind a tree to get a closer look. There were 3-4 men there. Not any I recognized, they looked grizzled and worn but tough as nails. They were shouting at a woman, dragging her it seemed. She was fighting them, kicking, grabbing at them, but there were more of them, and they were stronger.
They dragged out into the grass house, and then you could hear a tear of fabric, then another. They started pulling at her dress. I gasped, “N’aytok, they’re going to…”
“I know,” he said before I could finish.
“What do we do,” I whispered, “we have to help her!”
There was another tear of fabric, and a dress fell to the ground. The woman was bare from the waist up now. She clamped her arms over her exposed breasts, and one of the men pushed her to the ground. They laughed and cheered, as one of them dove on top of her. They were saying something about dragging her back to a ship when they were done? I could almost make it out.
“N’aytok!” I whispered loudly.
“I know!” he growled back in frustration, “I can’t take them all though. You’ll need to help.”
“How? I… I’ve never even hurt…” I stammered suddenly nervously.
“Well there’s a first time for everything, I’m counting on you.” He said as he crouched down and began to circle around the yard towards the men. “Shoot at them when you see me get their attention.”
Oh crap, my arms were shaking now as I fumbled for my bow. Could I even do this? I had to try, helping was all my idea after all. What if I miss? What if N’aytok gets hurt because I can’t help right? Or worse? I tried to fight back my doubts.
The woman screeched and screamed. The 4 men had her firmly pinned down. There was one between her legs, loosening his pants, pulling them down. Now laying down on her.
I took aim at him.
The man shuffled forward, driving his hips into the woman. I heard her gasp in despair.
“Where is N’aytok?” I whispered aloud. I didn’t think I could do this. The men probably deserved this, but that didn’t justify my actions did it?
The man was starting to thrust now, his mates cheering him on. “Fucking pigs,” I seethed under by breath.
That was it. They weren’t humans at all, just pigs, no different than the feral animals I’d shot earlier. Fuck them, and fucking N’aytok where was he? Hurry up! Time was ticking by as I waited. How long did it take to get in position? The man’s thrusts were quickening. Fuck waiting, I wasn’t going to let him finish.
One heartbeat, two, three, hold… and release.
Thunk.
There was a scream, and an odd-sounding gasp. I loaded another arrow.
One heartbeat, two, three, hold… and release.
Thunk.
More screaming. The men were panicking. I loaded another.
M’aytok jumped from the woods into the yard and bellowed loudly.
One heartbeat, two, three, hold… and release.
Thunk.
Three men were hit. One wasn’t moving much, the one who had been on top of the woman. He had just collapsed. He was laying there, an arrow, my arrow, was sticking out of his throat. I could see it very clearly. My mind froze up, terrified of what I had just done.
M’aytok was ready to fight, thankfully. He plunged his axe into the back of one of the injured who tried to flee. The other dropped to his knees and put his hands in the air. The man was shouting fearfully in a language I didn’t recognize. M’aytok walked over to the man and disarmed him, taking a cutlass and a small knife. Then walked over to the woman.
The woman managed to crawl out from under the now-dying attacker, but was terrified of M’aytok. I could hear her pleading with him not to hurt her.
“I am not your enemy. I’m here to help. I just saved you!” M’aytok tried explaining to the woman who was nearly inconsolable.
“Jessi? Can you help me here?” He finally called up to me.
His request shook me back to my senses. “Sorry! Coming!” I shouted as I stood up and walked down the hill. The woman turned her head to look at me. She seemed astonished.
“Sorry! I’m so sorry” I apologized again as I came into the clearing by the house, “We didn’t mean to frighten you. He’s telling the truth. We heard your screams and came to help. Are you hurt?” I blabbered.
“You’re with him?” She asked in surprise.
I nodded, “yes, we were just out hunting boar nearby.”
“But he’s a… and you’re…” she stammered and shook her head. “Sorry, I didn‘t mean to offend. I just thought…”
I reflected on how odd we must look, an Orc and a human working together. “It’s okay,” I tried to calm her, “Can you stand? What’s your name? Is there anyone else inside”
“Elisa… I’m Elisa,” she said as I pulled her to her feet, “No it’s just me, my husband was out hunting today as well.”
We talked for a bit and I helped her calm down as best I could while fixing her dress a bit. It was torn, but still wearable for the moment. It would need mending, but nothing I could do about right now.
N’aytok had been searching around the house as we talked. He seemed concerned, “I don’t see the fourth man.” he said with resignation. “We should leave, he may be back with others.” Then he turned to the injured man he’d disarmed. The man was just sitting there on the ground in pain, my arrow was wedged in his leg, and he was bleeding.
“Where did you come from? Are there more of you?” N’aytok bellowed in his most intimidating voice.
The man shook his head, and replied something fearfully in his own language.
“Bah, this isn’t going to get us anywhere.” N’aytok growled in frustration and began pacing. “Let’s get back to camp.”
“Can you come with us?” I asked Elisa, “We have medics in camp, and if more of those men return here, we’re all in danger.”
“But my husband,” Elisa replied, “What will he think when he sees these bodies?”
I nodded, she had a point, the poor man would fear the worst and wouldn’t know where to find her. “Can he read? Do you have anything to write with?” I asked.
“Yes, on the table, inside.” She replied.
The woman hurried into the house and returned a minute later, she’d left a note on the table, and grabbed a pin to hold up her dress. She worried what would happen if he came back and the men had returned, but I assured her we’d try to locate him if we could. Besides, if there were others we were likely nearly out of time, N’aytok was looking increasingly anxious.
N’aytok gather the injured man on his back and we climbed up the hill back towards camp, gathering two of our earlier kills from the tree as we went. We didn’t have means to carry the 3rd. There was no sign of Elisa’s husband anywhere as we went, but with the sun getting lower now we couldn’t look long, besides we were late returning as it was.
As we strolled into camp Elisa’s eyes grew wide with wonder.
“You live here? With them?” She wondered aloud.
“Yes, I do. Many of us do.” I explained as I nodded and smiled at another woman who’d come from town as she walked by. “Have you heard anything from Mossyrock lately?” I asked her.
“No, no, not a word. We don’t usually go into town except to sell what we grow anyway. We heard rumors there were invading Orcs near the city though. Many of us are afraid to go near town because of it, I guess they are true, maybe?” she asked uncertainly.
I nodded as we approached one of the tents. I took Elisa inside to meet Rachel and drop off our catch, while N’aytok handed our prisoner over to a medic and shortly after went into’s Nai’lox tent.
Rachel talked to Elisa a while, and one of the medics came by to check on Elisa. I sat down to decompress a bit. That’s when I realized I was shaking. I tried just to breathe and relax, but Nalia interrupted me before I could really get started.
“Hey Jessi, Nai’lox wants to see you,” she said as she poked her head in the tent.
“Okay, thanks, I’m going.” I said, jumping to my feet. I walked to the tent flapped and Nalia looked a me a bit confused.
“Is everything okay? Your face usually has more color right?” She asked innocently.
“I… I don’t know.” I said, answering honestly. “I… just don’t know.”
Nalia was silent, but something about her eyes told me she understood. I walked over to Nai’lox’s tent and stepped inside. He was sitting by a makeshift desk. N’aytok was there too. It looked like they had been speaking.
“You wanted to see me?” I asked.
“N’aytok told me what happened out there today,” he began.
“I’m sorry,” I apologized, “I didn’t mean for all this to happen. I shouldn’t have gotten involved. I should have waited for N’aytok’s signal to shoot. I shouldn’t have invited her back. I…”
“Jessi,” Nai’lox laughed to himself in a big deep belly laugh, the kind you’d only ever hear from an amused Orc “you’re too hard on yourself, you did amazing.”
“I… I did?” I stammered.
He laughed again, “Yes of course, we need people to think of us as a friend not an enemy, or our time here will be short. This valley would burn like the last did.”
That piqued my interest, “I saw that when we scouted you. The whole valley was in ruins. Why did you burn all the farms in there but not here?”
Nai’lox looked solemn, “We never burned that valley Jessi. That was done by your kind.”
My jaw dropped, “Wait? Humans did that? Why? Why would they?”
“They hoped to slow our advance. An army without food can’t fight after all. If we hadn’t caught and routed their scouts they would have done the same here.” He explained.
I was flabbergasted. It didn’t seem possible, but oddly enough it somehow fit what I knew deep down all too well. It’s the type of selfish act I’d seen many times from men in power. “I’m sorry, for assuming.” I apologized.
He shook his head, “It’s what they wanted you to believe, and they sold it well.”
“But, didn’t you threaten to burn the town, the night we first arrived here?” I asked absentmindedly, before realizing that was probably a smart idea.
Nai’lox shrugged it off however, “If our hand is forced we will. Power is rarely yielded without loss. They’ve been given a choice, and we’ll see how they respond. It is not our first inclination though. We are not some mindless horde from children’s storybooks.”
Then he stood up, “Anyway you should consider visiting our Shaman when you have time. Taking a life can weigh on your soul. She can help you find peace. Now go enjoy your meal, it’s been a long day.”
I nodded, “I’ll consider it, thank you.”
I joined the others around the bonfire and chatted with Rachel and Elisa some. I tried my best to be engaged, but failed miserably. Elisa felt a bit distant as well, our minds were elsewhere it seemed.
“Elisa? Elisa!?” Someone was calling out in camp, I turned to see who it was. A young man, human, was wandering and looking a bit lost towards the fire, a piece of paper in his hand.
Elisa sprung up, instantly recognizing the voice. She rushed to him and they held each other in embrace. Husband and wife were reunited at last. In that moment I couldn’t help but feel I’d made the right decision earlier in the day. No matter the demons that would haunt, those two would be together at least.

Why are all the Orcs calling her Jessi instead of Jenni?
SO GOOD!!! Bad Humans now added to the mix!!! Maybe a Shadowy Cabal, controlling these Rogue Raiding Humans, The Storm Raiders, and various other groups…..
Using these various Groups to fill their Gold Purses and Sex Slave Pens!!!
I can’t wait to See how they weave in and out “Jenni’s Tale” and what future plans Butterflies-n-Cream has in store for them!!!!
Updateme!
