It was only 9am and the beach was already crowded. Robert wasn’t so keen about travelling especially on holidays but his wife Mei insisted that they should have one since it’s been years they didn’t go on one.
Robert looked at the spot where Mei was at. He spotted a black guy talking to his wife. Jealous raged and Robert marched back to the shore.
“Dad are we leaving already?” asked his 10-yr-old son Kevin.
“Yeah, your mom’s alone on the beach.”
“But we’re only in the water for like 30 minutes!” he protested.
“Come on,” Robert put on his mean face and took off the round floater his son was in. The water splashed and got into Kevin’s eyes.
“Ahh it stings dad. I got water in my eyes,” he started yelling.
Robert was frustrated. He looked again at his wife. But a group of youngsters who just arrived the beach blocked his view.
“Dad get me some water,” Kevin started to cry.
“Hold on.” He asked people nearby and luckily some kind stranger let him use his water to rinse Kevin’s eyes.
After the drama he went into the crowd to get back to Mei. He saw her waving at them. The black guy was nowhere to be found.
“Have fun sweetie? You like the sea?” This was the first time Kevin had been on the beach. Mei was glad she insisted on this trip.
“Yes mom until the saltwater stang my eyes,” Kevin replied half-laughing.
“Is it alright now?” she gave a questioning look to her husband.
“Of course I’ve rinsed them with the water,” replied Robert with a slight of guilt for over-reacting at his wife being talked to by a stranger. He decided not to further enquire about it.
“Ok. Now I’m gonna go for a little swimming.” Mei said as she stripped down her summer dress. The red bikinis could barely covered her assets. As many Asian women, Mei had cream-colour skin which glistened under the coat of sunscreen. He could see men nearby took a glance at her. He cursed the guy who invented bikinis.
As Mei was doing warm-ups before swimming, she recounted her brief encounter with Dan. She was left behind on the beach to watch over their things when her husband and son were going dipping.
She was reading her copy of Klara and the Sun when a young black guy approached her.
“A beautiful woman like you shouldn’t be lonely on such a crowded beach.”
She looked up at the voice to find a tall black man in the swimming trunks. He was young — perhaps mid-20s — and lean.
“Who says I’m lonely?” she replied with a smile.
“Of course you got a book. I heard books make the best companion. But I’m not much of an Ishiguro fan. It doesn’t make a good beach read.”
“I don’t like beach reads.”
“I figured. You’re a stack of Jane Austen yourself.”
She smiled again and Dan knew it was an opening. “May I?” He sat beside her before Mei gave him permission.
The smell of sweat permeating from his young muscular body teased her nose. She was used to her husband’s cologne. The odour of this athletic young man reminded her of highschool and past boyfriends.
“I’m Dan — Daniel — by the way.”
“Mei.” And they two shook hands. She could feel the strong grip of his rough hand.
“You’re here alone?” asked she to avoid the awkward silence.
“Yeah. I’m looking for a good spot to take some photos.” He pointed at the camera hung from his neck.
“You’re a photographer?”
“More like amateur. I’m a carpenter but photography is what I do in my spare time.”
“The beach is pretty crowded. Any luck finding a good view?”
“Actually I just found one.”
“Where?”
“Here. You!”
She giggled like a schoolgirl at his response and he joined the laugh too. “I think now is the time to tell you I’m married.” She showed him her ring.
“I could guess it. What does it have to do with this exchange?”
“I just wanna get your hopes up. I mean you could find many pretty single ladies here. Don’t want you to waste your time with a married mom like me.” She silently prayed he didn’t do as she said and her prayers were answered.
“Look Mei. I also don’t want you to get a wrong impression. I admitted I approached you thinking you were single. But once I saw that ring, I just wanted us to be platonic. If you still feel uncomfortable, I will leave you alone.”
Mei felt relieved as she could sense he wasn’t willing to give up just yet. After all what kind of straight men wanted just to be platonic with a woman like her on the beach? Fools and liars. She knew he was latter since she could see his bulge was betraying his words.
“If you say so…,” replied Mei trying not to stare at his raging member in the short tight trunks.
“You know what I will leave my business card. Call me anytime if you want to go for drinks or chats or maybe to take some photos of you.” He took a card of his trunk pocket. “I’ll be here for a week and I hope to see you again.”
Mei nodded as she took the card. She watched his wide chiseled back as he was walking away. She felt the card in her hand which was damp from his sweat. Knowing this card had been to the closest place to his groin gave her an uncontrollable urge to smell it. And smell she did.
After taking a good whiff or two she could feel wetness in her panties. She took the photo of the card with her phone and tossed it into the nearest bin. She didn’t want her husband to find out even a trace of her encounter with Dan.
