But He’s My Teacher?

“Hey, can I borrow your straightener? I think I left mine at home.” I chuckled as Tori, the sorority girl next door, popped her head in from our shared bathroom. I rolled my eyes as I finished pulling my yoga pants on, adjusting the sparkly waistband.

“It’s on the dresser,” I said, gesturing towards my basket of hair products. “And, toss me a tank top will you?” I added as I ran a brush through my hair. Tori snagged the straighter from the top then rifled through my tank top collection in the second.

“Here, this will show off some of the sparkles on your sports bra, too.” She tossed a me an aquamarine tank top that I was pretty sure had been a swim suit cover up when I bought it. I pulled it on, adjusting slightly so that even though you could see parts of my sports bra it wasn’t super obvious.

Tori stopped by the bathroom door and gave me a quick once over. “That looks good. Now, please tell me you’re gonna do your make up. I mean, I know it’s early, but come on.”

“And, you can go now, Tor,” I said, tossing a throw pillow from my bed at her.

“You know you love me!” She stuck her tongue out at me then ducked back into our bathroom before I could launch another pillow. A quick glance in the mirror though told me she was right. I looked about as exhausted as I felt. I shot an angry look at the door Tori had disappeared though but grabbed a tube of liquid eyeliner anyway.

I walked into the class room forty minutes later and dropped down in a chair in the back, near the door. I hated math and had put it off as long as possible which is how I was a junior sociology major sitting in Algebra 101 For Dummies. I had even begged my advisor to get me out of it and no dice. The only upside was she promised that if I could suffer through and pass with a B, I would be home free.

Of course, she had waited until after my very enthusiastic thanks to tell me that it was going to be a morning class and also met on Fridays – both things I had managed to avoid with the rest of my schedule.

I watched the rest of the class trickle in while doodling in the margins of my notebook, every once in a while fidgeting with my tank top or pulling at my yoga pants. Not only was I out of bed hours before I normally would have been, the air conditioning in this part of the building was just barely putting out a breeze. Our summer would stretch on for another several weeks and I have a feeling this top floor classroom wouldn’t let me forget it.

Class hadn’t even started yet and I was already hating it.

And then this guy walked in, backpack slung over his shoulder, and my interest was immediately peaked. He was tall but not freakishly so, his dark hair was messy and he looked like he just rolled out of bed as well. I shifted in my seat, sitting up a little straighter and running my fingers through my hair. My gaze quickly darted to the seat next to me, part of me hoping that’s where he would sit.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he dropped his back pack on the table in the front of the room and wiggled the mouse of the computer on the podium. Several of the other people in the room looked at each other confused as well, but then mystery hot guy spoke.

“Hey guys, I’m Nick Meyer. I’m a business and accounting major with a physics minor. I’m in the graduate program and teaching beginning math classes cause let’s face it, we all know tuition here is killer. So, on that note, welcome to Math 1000, I’ll be your teacher this semester.”

I groaned inwardly. I was in a world of trouble.

I never made any conscious plans to go after Nick. The idea of starting an affair with a teacher, even one that was only a grad student, never crossed my mind. But that’s exactly what I ended up doing.

That first fifty minute class seemed to fly by. I even caught myself laughing at one point. Nick – he encouraged us to call him by his first name, apparently being referred to as ‘Mr. Meyer’ freaked him out – said he understood that most of us were only taking this class to fulfill our math requirement. He didn’t seem surprised that no one in the class was going into a math related field.

Because of that, he said he would try to make the class as laid back as possible, only covering the things we absolutely had to know. “My goal for this semester is for you guys to not completely hate me by the time this semester is over,” Nick laughed.

Based on the looks some of the other girls in the class were giving him, I had a hard time believing any one here could actually hate him.

I was surprised when I was disappointed when class ended. I was even more surprised when I found myself hanging back as the rest of the class trickled out of the room. Once I was the only one left in the room I slipped my backpack over my shoulder and made my way up to the front of the room where Nick was slipping the folder containing today’s attendance sheet into his back pack.

He looked up at me and smiled, although I could tell he was surprised I was still in the room. “Is there something I can help you with…” I could see him struggling to remember my name.

“Isabel,” I told him. “But you can call me Izzie, or Bell. That’s what my friends call me.”

“Alright then, Izzie. What can I do for you?” His easy smile was back on his lips and I suddenly had no idea what to say or what I was even still doing here.

“I, um, well you see, math isn’t my best subject,” I tripped over my words, having more difficulty stringing a sentence together than I think I ever had. What the hell was wrong with me, I never had this much trouble flirting.

Nick laughed. “I try to keep this class pretty easy, especially since we’re first thing in the morning. I know this isn’t how you guys want to start your day. We’ll just cover the basics that I know are on the final.”

I smiled, nodding. Nick glanced at his watch and I wondered if I was being dismissed.

“But, if you are having trouble, please let me know. I have no problem tutoring you or helping you work through the homework.”

“That would be great,” I told him, knowing I was smiling like an idiot. “I would really appreciate that.”

“Here, let me see your notebook,” he said, holding out his hand. I pulled the blue notebook that I had been using in class out of my back pack and handed it to him, instantly embarrassed about all of the doodles I had made in the margins. There was no need to be though because Nick flipped to one of the last pages and wrote his phone number in the same clear block letters he had used on the whiteboard.

“Shoot me a text sometime later today so I have your number and then feel free to use it whenever you want to.”

“Thank you,” I said, hoping the smile on my lips was more cool and confident than it felt.

“You’re welcome, Izzie. I hope you enjoy the class,” he glanced at his watch again. “I’m sorry, but I really do have to run. My advanced accounting class is on the other side of campus and starts, well, now.” He chuckled. “I’ll see you Friday morning.”

“Definitely,” I told him as he slipped his back pack over his shoulder.

With an easy smile he told me to have a good day and disappeared out of the room. “You too,” I whispered quietly, long after he was out of ear shot. I looked at his number in my notebook one more time before returning it to my bag.

Tori was never going to believe this.

It was almost two weeks later before I talked myself into using Nick’s number.

The first handful of classes we had had were just a review of basic algebra; things we should have covered back in high school but would still be on our first test. Tori kept telling me that I should just suck it up and call him, after all, he did give me his cell number when his school assigned email was on the syllabus for questions.

I was torn though. He didn’t give me any sort of special treatment in class, not that I necessarily wanted him to. Although, he did always smile when I walked in, and my name had been changed to Izzie on the attendance sheet he passed around at the start of our second class.

It was the Thursday night of our third week at school and Tori had made Nick the center of our conversation once again while she got ready in my room for a party.

“For God’s sake Izzy, just text the man already!” Tori exclaimed, pointing a stick of eyeliner at me. “Pretend that you don’t understand those liney things that you’re doing in class if you have to.”

“I do understand them though,” I said from where I sat on the edge of my bed. “For the most part at least.” I hugged the throw pillow that was in my lap as her reflection in the mirror glared at me.

“Come on girl, he gave you his personal number! Not an office number or told you to use his stupid school email, but his fucking cell phone number. He basically told you to call him!” Her reflection in the mirror dared me to argue with her again.

I groaned, falling onto my back and pressing the pillow over my face, muttering a string of excuses. It didn’t matter if Tori couldn’t understand them through the pillow, she had been hearing them all for days now.

“Fine!” Tori snapped, spinning around and plucking my phone off of my dresser. “Either you do it or I will!”

I sat up quickly, eyes wide as she held my phone out to me, when I hesitated she wiggled it. “Going once, going twice…” I bit my lip, not knowing what to do. “Looks like I’m doing it,” she said with a smirk pulling the phone away from me.

“Wait! I’ll do it!” I cried, snatching the phone out of her hand before she did something I would end up hating her for.

“Good girl,” she said with a chuckle, plopping down on the bed next to me.

Tori watched over my shoulder as I opened a new text message and made ‘tick tock’ noises when I hesitated before typing. Before I could chicken out I wrote *Hey, it’s Izzie. Are you busy?* and hit send before I could talk myself out of it.

“You’re so boring,” Tori informed me before getting up and going back to perfecting her hair. “I’d have sent my boobs.”

“Have you ever thought about getting ready in your own room then?” I shot back, watching my phone as if it was going to explode at any second. Tori just stuck her tongue out at me over her shoulder and went back to what she was doing.

Tori was almost ready for her sorority party when my phone chimed, alerting me that I had an unread text message. She squealed and ran over to me, pulling my phone out of my hand almost before I had finished reading the message.

*Hey Izzie. I’m glad you texted, I was just thinking about you.*

Tori squeaked happily again and did a little dance before tossing my phone back into my lap. “What did I tell you? See? Your life would be so boring without me!”

When I didn’t respond she wiggled my foot. “So what are you gonna say?”

I almost didn’t hear her though, the last few words of Nick’s message still running though my mind.

I was just thinking about you…

The words continued to run through my mind as if they were on a loop. What did that mean exactly?

I was just thinking about you.

How was I supposed to reply to that? It wasn’t until I was staring at his text message on my phone that I realized part of me had been hoping he wouldn’t text me back, that Tori and I had been wrong and he was just my teacher. Another – surprisingly large – part of me was excited. The butterflies in my stomach went crazy as I let myself wonder just what exactly he had been thinking about me.

“Earth to Izzie,” Tori’s voice broke through my thoughts as she waved her hand in front of my face.

“What are you going to say?” she asked once she was sure she had my attention again.

“I don’t know,” I replied honestly, shrugging my shoulders.

“I do!”

Before I could stop her, Tori plucked my phone out of my hands and started typing. I was on my feet in an instant, trying to wrestle the phone from her. I was too late.

“What did you do?” I asked with a groan as she finally released her death grip on my phone.

“Absolutely nothing,” she sang as she picked up her make up. “Anyway, I have to run, I’m late. Have fun tonight!” With a wink she disappeared through the bathroom.

After glaring at her retreating back I turned my attention back to the phone in my hand, hitting the unlock button. The screen lit up, revealing the conversation with Nick and Tori’s incriminating text.

*What about me? ;)*

I groaned, mentally yelling every nasty thing I could think of at Tori. It’s not like I could tell him that it wasn’t me who sent that text, even though nothing had happened between us yet he was still my teacher. I didn’t want to scare him off by making him think I had told the entire world.

I half expected to not hear back from him so when my phone chimed not thirty seconds later I was surprised. Apparently ‘my’ sudden forwardness had been a good thing.

*How about I tell you in person? I was just about to go out for a late dinner, care to join me?*

I could feel the blush creeping onto my cheeks as I started typing, already trying to plan an outfit.

*Yeah, that sounds great*.

The second I hit the send button I started flipping through the contents of my closet. The purple tank top I was wearing would work; it hugged my body in all the right places and showed just the right amount of cleavage. I had just found the right pair of jeans – skinny jeans with a sparkly design on the back pockets – when my phone beeped from my bed.

*Awesome! I live in the campus apartments right behind the library. Wanna come by here and I’ll drive?*

I read his text while pulling off my sweats. So much for a quiet night of studying. I danced around my room in my underwear as I texted him back, saying that sounded perfect and I’d head that way in a few minutes.

Once the text sent I pulled on my jeans and started trying to perfect my hair and make up. He texted me one last time giving me the specifics of where his apartment was. The see you soon at the end made the butterflies in my stomach go crazy once more.

Fifteen minutes later I found myself knocking on Nick’s apartment door. It wasn’t until now that I realized just how insane this was and started getting nervous again.

But then Nick opened the door.

“Hey Izzie. I’m glad you came,” Nick said as he invited me inside. I took a tentative step forward but his smile gave me all the courage that I needed to walk a little more confidently into his apartment. I could hear the door closing behind me but I was preoccupied looking around the apartment.

It was small; your typical college apartment. It didn’t scream ‘A college guy lives here,’ though and I couldn’t help but wonder if he had picked up before I came over. A small part of me, including those pesky butterflies, hoped that he had.

The front door opened up into the living room which was furnished with a beaten up, but comfortable looking couch, an old lazy boy and a large TV mounted on the wall. There was also a coffee table with faint rings from beer cans, or at least I imagined they were from beer cans.

“Would you like the grand tour?” Nick asked, stepping up next to me and smiling.

I returned the smile before I even realized my lips were moving. Good lord he was attractive. “That would be nice.” Nick looked slightly more relaxed than he had when he opened the door. He reached out and took my hand, gently intertwining our fingers. His hand was warm around mine and I couldn’t help but notice that even though my hand looked small compared to his, our fingers fit together almost perfectly.

We looked up at the same time, catching each others gaze like we were living a real life romcom. He squeezed my hand lightly and we both smiled, my grip on his hand tightening slightly for a moment.

“Come on, let me show you around.” There was noticeable relief in his eyes, he had been worried that I would pull my hand back. The butterflies in my stomach were having a field day, and this time they were threatening to move even lower.

“Lead the way!”

I had been in the campus apartments before and Nick’s wasn’t much different. He had a small kitchen off the living room and his room and a bathroom were down a short hallway. When we got back to the living room he shrugged almost embarrassed. “It isn’t much, but it’s home for now.”

“I like it,” I said, squeezing his hand lightly.

“Good.” That amazing smile was back on his lips and the twinkle in his eye made me want to kiss him right then and there.

“So, thoughts about dinner?” he asked after a slight pause. “Did you have anything in particular in mind?”

I shook my head. “I hadn’t really thought about it to be honest.” I laughed a little. “What had you been planning before I texted you?”

Nick thought for just a second, “Have you been to that diner just off campus? The one on Clark?”

I had to think for a minute, trying to picture Clark Street – directions were not my strong suit. “I think so. Is it the place that looks like it’s straight out of the fifties?”

“That’s the place!” He looked excited that I had been there. “Do you wanna go?”

“That sounds great.” Tori and I had gone down there the first week of school and as far as I could remember the food had been good. Then again, I was pretty sure anywhere would be perfect tonight.

Nick had grabbed his keys off the short book shelf by the door but he paused for just a second before he opened the door and instead turned back to face me.

“You know what, before we go I wanna do something.” The next thing I knew he had pulled me to him, one of his hands resting on my hip, the other cupping my cheek. I had just realized what he was doing when his lips met mine.

It wasn’t an overly long kiss, it wasn’t something that was packed with passion and made me want to rip his clothes off right there. Instead it was soft, full of the promise of more to come, my skin tingling where he touched me. It was everything a first kiss should be.

“There,” Nick said with a smile as he pulled back, both hands now resting gently on my hips. “Now we can go.”

My head was spinning. Had he really just kissed me? I wasn’t dreaming, right?

The twinkle in his eye and the easy smile on his lips told me all that I needed to know as I become overly aware of his hands resting lightly on my hips.

“On second thought,” he said, his smile turning slightly mischievous, “How badly do you really wanna go eat?” Food was suddenly the last thing I wanted.

“You know, now that you mention it, I’m really not all that hungry.” I tried to sound off hand about it but I knew my smile gave me away as I rested my hand lightly against his chest.

“How about a movie instead?” he asked, grabbing my hand and leading me back over to the couch.

There was no more mention of a movie, possibilities of titles never crossed our lips as he pulled me down next to him. I don’t know how long it was before either of us spoke again, or even came up for air for that matter. All I knew was as soon as my ass hit the couch he pulled me to him, and it wasn’t long before I leaned back and pulled him down on top of me.

I knew there were questions I should have been asking myself. A million and one reasons I shouldn’t be doing this – the fact that he was my teacher being only one of them – but those things couldn’t have been farther from my mind.

His lips were soft against my own, against my skin, and his scent invaded my senses. It took me a second to realize that the soft moan filling the air around us was coming from me as Nick made his way down my neck to my collar bone.

I couldn’t help but squirm as he slid his hand under my purple tank top, his fingers dancing up the swell of my rib cage and tracing along the edge of my bra leaving a trail of warmth and sparks against my skin.

It could have been five minutes or maybe half an hour later when he finally pulled away. There was a different kind of spark in his eye now. It wasn’t just fun and flirty anymore, this was lust; desire.

“Are you sure?” he asked softly as I tried to catch my breath.

I nodded.

“Are you positive? Cause we can stop now.” He started to pull back farther, to sit up, but I grabbed the front of his t-shirt, pulling him down, my lips finding his.

“I’m positive,” I murmured against his lips.

His hands were soft and warm against my skin, but there was an undeniable undercurrent of need. His lips found my neck – kissing, nibbling – as he pushed my tank top up to my ribs, his fingers caressing the top curve of my breasts. The next thing I knew he was pulling me up kissing me hard before pulling the tank top up and over my head, tossing it to the floor.

His lips found the soft, exposed skin of my breasts as he slipped my bra straps off my shoulders. Seconds later the lace bra landed on my tank top and his teeth found my hard nipples, making me cry out.

My moans seemed to do nothing but encourage Nick as my nails raked down his back under his shirt.

“You like that?” he whispered huskily in my ear, nibbling gently, another satisfied mew escaping my lips.

I pulled his t-shirt up and over his head in response, throwing it to the side and pulling him back down to me. His skin was tanned and warm and my fingers danced over muscles his shirts had always concealed. It was his turn to moan when my teeth found the soft, sensitive spot above his collar bone.

Desire and longing filled his eyes as his hips pressed into mine, his hands trying to cover my entire upper body at once. They were rough against my nipples, massaging my breasts, pressing me deeper into the couch as our tongues waged a war of their own.

I couldn’t remember the last time someone’s hands on my body felt this good – awoken this kind of fire inside of me – and I found myself unable to keep my own hands under control as I explored his body, leaving red scratch marks caressing the muscles of his arms.

It wasn’t much longer before our jeans were added to the pile of clothes on the floor.

That first time on the couch in the living room of his apartment was urgent, intense. We needed each other and we needed each other right then. There was no time or need for thought until we lay panting, pressed together on the couch, goofy grins on both of our faces.

I ended up staying the night at Nick’s that night. We talked and laughed, getting to know each other outside of the classroom as we sat on the couch. I had stolen his shirt, but he didn’t complain once about seeing me walk around his apartment in my panties and his shirt. Eventually, when food became a necessity, he made me dinner and we finally got around to watching that movie we had talked about.

At almost two in the morning we moved to his room and a joke about stealing his shirt back ended with him pushing me onto his bed. Things were slower this time, less urgent but still intense, only in a different way.

As amazing as things had been earlier that night, they felt rushed compared to round two. We moved against each other slower, exploring each other more thoroughly. We took the time to figure out what the other liked, what we wanted.

I fell asleep that night in the last place I expected to be: curled up next to Nick as he played with my hair. Just as I was falling asleep, Nick leaned forward and kissed my forehead. I could feel his lips moving as he whispered, “I’m so glad you came over tonight.”

Friday morning I slipped in the class room door just as Nick was pulling out the attendance sheet out of his bag.

“I’m glad you could join us this morning, Izzie,” Nick said, handing the attendance sheet to a girl in the front row to start passing around. His tone was even, with a touch of reprimand, but the sparkle in his eyes and the secret smile on his lips when he looked back over told me he was still thinking about last night.

“I’m sorry, it was a late night.” I was sure the smile on my face as I slid into my usual seat gave away how I had spent my evening so I tried to not make eye contact with Nick and give it all away.

“You have to love thirsty Thursday around here, don’t you?” Nick said with a chuckle and the room filled with a chorus of positive responses. I noticed for the first time how many people had bottles of water or Gatorade on their desks.

Nick smiled at the room. “How about since it is Friday and we just had our first unit test Wednesday, we just go over some of the homework problems then get the hell out of here?” His suggestion was met with cheers, sighs of relief and even a few whistles I noticed that their were also more than a few cringes as well as the volume in the room rose.

“Volunteers to the board, any problems you had questions about from Wednesday’s homework,” Nick instructed, pulling a handful of dry erase markers out of his bag and leaving them on the table.

Slowly, a handful of people made their way to the front of the room, notebooks or torn out pieces of paper in their hands. Nick caught my eye as I unzipped my back pack and I smiled before pulling out my notebook. Flipping the notebook open to my homework the butterflies returned, this was the same notebook that Nick had written his number in just a few weeks ago.

“While they’re putting those up there,” Nick started again. “Let’s talk Halloween.” Almost everyone in the room stopped talking. Halloween next Thursday night was the main topic on campus. “I’m not stupid. I know everyone of you is gonna end up going out next week…” he trailed off.

“So you’re going to give us the day off?” a football player asked from the back of the room, looking like Christmas had come early.

“I am,” Nick confirmed. “I don’t think any of you want to feel like death while watching me attempt to teach hungover. And what the hell, anyone who dresses up for class on Wednesday will get 5 bonus points.”

The rest of class passed quickly. We couldn’t have been in our seats twenty minutes. Most of the time the conversation focused around Halloween, who was throwing a party and what everyone was dressing up as. When Nick dismissed the class I hung back a little, copying down a problem from the board. Once the last person left the room he came over, sitting on the desktop next to me.

“We cut it a little close this morning,” he said with a smile, leaning over and kissing me.

“We’ll just have to be more careful next time or I’ll be wearing your shirt to class,” I teased, unable to keep the cheesy smile off my face.

“You want there to be a next time?” he asked, playfully tugging on a strand of my hair as I zipped my backpack.

“Yeah, I do,” I told him, looking up into his sparkling eyes. “Do you?”

He grabbed my hand, pulling me up and to him. “I do.”

And that was how we spent the next month; stolen kisses after class, secret smiles in hallways, and movie nights at his apartment. The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break flew by.

“Are you gonna miss me?” Nick asked me the last Sunday before I went home for break, curled up on his couch where we were watching TV, my sociology book propped up in my lap.

“Maybe,” I teased, looking up to kiss his cheek.

“Only maybe, huh?” he asked, tickling my sides.

“Stop it!” I cried between giggles, trying to squirm away from him as the textbook hit the floor with a thud.

After a long moment he stopped, pulling me to him and kissing me instead. “Still only maybe?” he asked, his voice a husky whisper against my ear.

“I guess I’ll miss you,” I admitted, kissing him again.

“Good, because I’m gonna miss you,” he told me, shifting so that he was laying down and pulling me down on top of him.

“Then I better give you something good to think about while I’m gone,” I said, a sly smile on my lips as I leaned down, kissing him hard.
