“Mind if I watch along with you boys?”
The question was innocent enough, and despite Aaron not wanting his mother so involved in him and his friends movie watching, she was his mother.
He was not going to turn her down. But where Aaron gave a simple quieted “sure” his friend Reed immediately took the middle spot of the couch, and enthusiastically tapped the spot to his left with a smile.
“Sure Mrs. Larin, it’s just starting still” the tone full of cheerfulness that Aaron felt a bit of resentment towards.
Only made worse as his mother smiled and thanked him as she took the spot. Sitting onto the black leathery sofa, legs huddled and towards reed slightly.
Aaron felt silly but find himself glancing intently at them as reed offered a piece of his blanket, and his mother took. They seemed to lean together more than not because of this, but Aaron knew he was being fanatical, so refocused on the movie.
They say quietly for the most part. Passing and eating popcorn and sipping their drinks with the occasional joke here and there.
But despite enjoying the movie, Aaron still felt a different vibe with his mother their.
Not being able to joke as much with his friend with her around, and even some of the jokes he did make didn’t seem to stick as much as usual. But his mothers jokes seems to work just fine on Reed.
In fact, it was as if suddenly his mother a comedian with the way reed seems to laugh with her. Their quieted giggles and little bonding s over the movies scenes made aaron feel like a third wheel to, dare he think, a date.
The movie hit its half way point and aaron had refilled the popcorn, coming back from the kitchen, right in time to see reeds head full on laying on his mothers shoulder.
He felt a strange feeling in his stomach and lingered, dragging his feet a little before settling back down. “Tired reed?” He finally spoke up, to which reed and his mother seemed to get bashful. A shuffle in there seats.
“Oh no I’m fine bro, I just was dozing off, sorry Amina.” He said with a little laugh. His mother giving a similar one.
This was enough for Aaron. Who’s hand griped the chairs arm with some pent up emotion.
“It’s Mrs. Larin to you” he grumbled, a noticeable disdain which was met by his mother.
“Oh it’s fine aaron. I told him he can call me that. Right reedy?” She said with a little wink to reed who seemed a little smug as he responded with “ofc Mrs. Larin, I mean Amina”
She laughed with a little playful push of his arm.
They laughed, and Aaron was teeming with. Anger now.
He stood up, clenched fist and a look of annoyance on his brow.
“You know I though we were gonna enjoy the movie, but it seems like you guys would rather just talk and ruin the movie” . He said upset.
“Hey man, calm down, why are you angry?” Reed said a bit more serious but his left arm rested on the top of the couch, begin where his mother sat.
“I’m not angry.” Aaron said
“Aaron why are you talking like that to your friend? We’re all just having fun” his mother spoke up arms folded.
“You’re a fucking bother.” He blurte out, immediately regretting it but wouldn’t show it.
“Bro!” Reed said looking upset resting his hand on his mothers back as she gasped.
“I’m going to bed, it’s been a long day” Aaron pulled back. His mother dismissing him with an annoyed goodbye.
The door shut behind him before aaron laid on his bed, wondering what is happening to his life. Why did he react like that? Was he wrong for acting the way he did? Why did they seem so close? Why did his mother become so “comfortable” around him??
He didn’t know what to do, as he laid there, looking at the ceiling fan. Watching it spin slowly as he dozed off…
“Omg Reed!”
The words muffled but enough to wake him again. He sat up rubbing his eyes, and heard more giggling. Checking his phone the time read clearly 12:00 sharp. Unbelievable. The two must’ve watched the whole marathon by now, and seemed louder than ever.
He hated it, and soon he was descending the stairs. Slowly, quietly heading to the bottom.
The same dark living room and kitchen, being illuminated only by the tv, still playing the next movie of the franchise, the speakers just as loud, except, no one sat in the seats of the couch. The living room dead still. The blankets laying partially on the floor and partially on the couch.
He approached it and noticed the popcorn box had fallen off the arm of the furniture and the popcorn told a dramatic story as it’s pieces were laid in a wide area on the white carpet.
He briefly scooped up what he could back in and threw it away before noticing another thing.
A belt. Laying on the counter top. Weird but Aaron was to bewildered to really even think about it, because once again he heard commotion.
The door at the end of the hall was being opened. His mothers voice caught again heard, and for some reason aaron ran. Out of sight of the living room. His stomach in naughts as his heart was pounding.
He wanted to go back to his bedroom, but he also couldn’t stop from listening as best he could as reed and Amina spoke in a slight whisper. The door opening and closing again followed by little footsteps.
Aaron wondered what business they had even doing in there. His mind immediately bringing up the rooms down that hall.
The bathroom, attic, garage, and storage closet there. He didn’t know what to think or feel only to be frozen in his tracks. Knowing they were approaching the living room.
“Thst was so crazy Reed, I can’t believe you.” Amina said sounding tired but still enthusiastic.
“I can’t belive me either. I guess it’s just genetics or something…. This was one of the best sleep overs I’ve ever had”
“You should come over more often!” They laughed together.
“But I think I’m ready for bed…good night reedy” she said sounding so sooth.
“Good night Amina, and Oh- don’t forget this”
“Omg, good catch reed. Keep it. Until next sleep over” the two laughed again and Aaron nearly fainted from seeing their faint shadows and voices approaching the corner to the stairs , he ran up as quietly as he could and dove under his covers.
The complete silence roaring in his ears only broken up by the opening of closing of doors. First of his mothers down the upper hallway, and his own, as his friend came and slept on the blowup mattress nesr Aaron’s own.
He slept terribly waking up again and again, unlike his mother and friend….

I hope that was enjoyable or at least understandable :)
