The Other Side – Chapter 1 (Nick) [M/F]

Nick – Chapter I

It was one of the hottest days of the summer, a Tuesday deep into the month of July. One of those days that makes you wish for winter to come sooner, just to escape the molten fury of the sun. Thus, it was just another day for Nicholas Monroe as he sat within the living room of his 3-room apartment, lounging around on the couch and wishing his damn air conditioner wasn’t broken. Sweat glistened on his pale skin and dampened his trim dark hair. All the windows had been opened, and he was sprawled out in nothing but his socks and underwear, trying desperately to avoid the inferno. He lay there, scrolling through his phone, looking enviously at the pictures of his friend Fernando in the cold Appalachian mountains, skiing down a slope with a silly grin on his face. Nick, as he went by to most people, wished greatly that he could have just a fraction of that snow to plunge his body into, if only for temporary relief. Loudly, a knock came from the door. Nick looked up from his phone as he heard another knock. “Nick? Are you home?,” came a feminine voice from the other side. Nick, as if electrically charged, sprung from the couch and grabbed for his pants. He had one foot through before stepping down on a leftover beer bottle that must have rolled out from under the table, the only remnants of his twenty-second birthday celebration he’d had a couple of days ago. The bottle rolled out from under his feet, his knee buckled, and he came crashing down onto the table. He cried out, luckily only having the wind knocked out of him. “Nick? Are you okay? … I’m coming in!” Keys were heard jingling, the lock turned, and a tall woman of fair skin entered quickly, closing the door and locking it behind her. “Oh! Nick… I… sorry… are you okay? I heard a loud crash and a yell, so I wasn’t sure if… do you need help?” Her questions were cut off as Nick raised a hand. “Nah, nah. I’m-I’m good. Just winded is all,” he grunted as he slowly pulled himself up from the floor. The women turned around, and Nick dressed himself, taking extra care when fitting his legs into his pants. “Alli,” Nick sighed, “we’ve been friends for how long now? Five years? You don’t need to turn away for me to put some pants and a shirt on.” Alli, as she was called, turned back to him. “I know, I know. It just seemed respectful, ya know?” Allison Pech stood a good two to three inches taller than Nick, with a blonde ponytail that faded into a pleasant shade of lavender. “Like you’ve ever cared about that.” Nick let out a little laugh, and Alli made a fake pouty face towards him. “You’re impossible Nick! Anyways, Lisa and I were gonna head down to the Indigo Aurora this Friday night. You wanna come with? You could invite Robbie to come with us, if you want.” Nick paused, mentally checking to see if he had any plans that night. “Uh, yeah, sure, I should be free. And I’ll send Robbie a text, though I doubt I’ll get an answer until later. He usually works pretty late.” Alli smiled, her face red from the heat. “Right, cool. Can you pick me up, or should I ask Lisa?” Nick nodded. It only made sense, as Alli lived much closer to him than Lisa, and they rode together not infrequently. “So, Alli, what brings you here? I assume you didn’t travel all this way just to ask me to party with you?” Alli looked up from her phone, smiled, and reached into her bag. “Right. I came over here to say that I’m sorry for missing the party. As you know, I was out of town at a job interview. If it was anything else, you know I would have been there, but I’d been waiting for that call for months now.” She removed a small package from her purse, and handed it to him. Nick took the wrapped parcel in his grasp. It was small, and fit neatly into his hands. He tore the outer layer, revealing a neatly made, hand-knit blanket within. “Did you make this?” Nick asked her, incredulous. “Uh, yeah. I recently started to learn knitting, and this is my first big project.” Alli responded, blushing despite the heat. Nick grinned. “It looks amazing, although I doubt I’ll be using it anytime soon.” They both laughed at that, and Nick folded the blanket and hung it over the back of the couch. “Thanks Alli. I love it. And if that’s what your first project looks like, I can’t wait to see how much you’ll improve.” Alli smiled again before turning to leave. “Thanks for the compliment, and I guess I’ll see you on Friday, if not before then.” She gave a little wave, they said their goodbyes, and she left, her ponytail swishing behind her as Nick watched. After a moment, he bent down and began picking up the torn paper from the ground. As he worked, he noticed a small, purple thing that was lying on the floor where Alli had been standing. Nick crawled over and picked it up to inspect it. His eyes opened wide in surprise as he identified the small package as a condom, belonging to a brand he himself didn’t buy. He guessed that it must have fallen out of Allison’s bag when she had given him the blanket, without either of them noticing. Nick gathered the rest of the remaining paper, dumped it into his trash can, and walked into his bedroom. He sat on his bed, and set the closed condom on his bedside table. He was also now acutely aware of the massive hard-on that was protruding through his jeans. Nick’s mind was full of thoughts. Why did Alli have a condom in her purse? As far as Nick knew, she didn’t have a boyfriend, and he thought that she wasn’t the type to have frequent one-night stands. So why did she just have a condom on hand? And what had triggered the stiffness within his pants? Had it been Alli? Had she seen it? It was too much for Nick to worry about currently. He sighed, flopped back onto his bed and unzipped his pants. He just had to relax, and had the perfect idea on how to do so.
