Felix heard the shower turn off as he searched through his closet for a more flattering shirt than the college sweatshirt he had worn all day. The old Bears logo had faded after thirteen years of the wash cycle and he was a bit embarrassed when he saw the stains in the mirror. He was holding up a maroon button-up shirt and a light blue blazer in the reflection when Lucy walked by his door wrapped in a towel. She sighed, shook her head, and walked into the room. After delving into his closet for a minute, she returned with a dark gray suit jacket.

“This with the red shirt. You can thank me later”, Lucy said as she tossed him the garment. She was about a foot shorter than he was, though she didn’t always look it due to her long legs. Her voice was black coffee with extra sugar and she smiled as she headed for the door. Just as she was leaving the room, she looked back over her shoulder. “Oh, and toss out that old thing. For your students’ sake”. She clicked her tongue and walked out. Felix’s face was a bit red as he pulled the sweatshirt off and started unbuttoning his evening shirt. It’ll be nice to get out of the house for something besides lecture, he thought, eying the envelope that held their tickets. A murder mystery dinner wasn’t his usual nightly affair, but after winning them in a radio contest, he felt a bit of divine providence must have been involved. Who knows, maybe I’ll meet someone there. He smiled in the mirror, posing in his new outfit. He wasn’t the most social person in the world, certainly not compared to his flatmate, but he felt confident in the blazer she’d picked out. Of course, he then struck a rather involved pose just as she passed his room again, eliciting a giggle from Lucy followed by her sarcastically swooning and letting out an exasperated sigh. Now his face was fully red as he quickly turned away from the door, embarrassed.

“Oh come on, I was just kidding. Don’t forget the tickets, I’ve just gotta grab something really quickly”, she said before skipping off through the living room to their shared bathroom. By the time he’d turned around, she was out of sight. Felix grabbed the tickets and his keys from the top of his dresser and left the room. As he walked into the living room, she was standing in the doorway to the bathroom on the other side. “Well, how do I look?”, she said, feigning a curtsy in a short yellow dress that flowed over one shoulder and wrapped tightly around her hips. Felix stared for a moment, his eyes drifting from her red fingernails to her braided brunette hair and then settling on the sun-shaped gold necklace that glittered in the center of her chest. “Felix? Are you going just going to stare all night?”, she said, putting her hands on her hips.

“Great! Sorry, I mean- You look great. Ready to go?”, he said, quickly turning his attention to the gold-leafed envelope. “Man, these tickets are worth a fortune, huh?”, he said, eying the way the light caught the reflective foil.

“Yeah, I’ve heard that they make you play someone else’s character or something, for the immersion. It’s gonna be fun, but we gotta go now or we’re going to get stuck in traffic”. Felix’s watch read 4:39 as they headed out of their apartment and down to the street below. Felix hopped into the driver seat and pulled up the directions as Lucy got into the passenger side. The venue wasn’t far away, but he still hadn’t heard of it before.

“Chateau Félicité”, Felix said, struggling through the words with what remained of his knowledge from high school French class. “Have you ever heard of this place?”, he asked. Her face turned a bit red and she looked down sheepishly. Felix was caught off guard by the reaction from his typically bold and unabashed flatmate.

“Only once, they host, um, intimate parties”, she said, laughing nervously. “Anyway, c’mon, the anticipation is killing me!”, she joked. Felix swallowed the many questions that had popped into his head and started down West Concourt street. He glanced over and caught a glimpse of Lucy’s brunette hair as the sunlight washed over her. The drive was short as they headed into The Hills where much of the city’s upper-class restaurants and boutiques were situated. They turned off of the main road down a long, winding driveway lined with well-manicured shrubs and trees. In the end, they found themselves before a large, beautiful manor. By the looks of it, they were among some of the last guests to arrive.

“I thought this thing started at five? Were we supposed to get here early?”, he asked, checking the details scrawled across the sealed envelope. He read through the list of directions printed in script across the flat face. The party will begin at Five o’clock. Please come freshly groomed and dressed appropriately. Do not open this envelope until instructed to do so. It seemed strange to wait until arriving before getting the tickets out, but as he looked at Lucy she simply shrugged and they both got out of the car. When they reached the tall, mahogany doors at the front of the building, they swiftly opened before them as an older gentleman greeted them.

“Welcome, you must be Master Felix and Miss Lucy. Please, come in, the party is soon to begin. May I see your envelope?”, he said, holding out a white-gloved hand. Felix gave him the envelope and smiled at Lucy. “Master Felix… Has a better ring to it than Professor Saperstein, don’t you think?”. She giggled and cocked her head at him. I think that both have their merits, she said, grinning. The man opened up the envelope with an ornate letter opener and pulled out the two tickets. After reading them, he handed them off to another attendant.

“Alright, you, sir, will be in changing room one down this hall, and miss, I will show you to changing room seven so that you may both get prepared”. He led them down the hall, gesturing for Felix to enter the first door on their right before continuing down the way with Lucy. Felix opened the door and found a beautifully tiled powder room. There were several rows of outfits hung up on display along the walls and an attendant already inside waiting for him. As he entered the room, he noticed the hum of a small machine which he soon identified as the chair that was sitting beside the attendant. He gestured to Felix to sit down.

“Thank you for joining us tonight, Master Felix. Please, take a seat”. Felix sat down in the comfortable chair and noticed that it was facing a large mirror on the opposite wall. “Very good, sir. Now, have you attended a party thrown here at the Chateau Félicité before?”.

“No, sir. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of this place until tonight”, Felix replied, his stomach turning with nervous energy.

“I see. Then I shall explain the revolutionary technology employed here at the Chateau”. He lifted up a strange device that seemed to Felix like an oddly shaped helmet with wires extending from each side. “This device is capable of temporarily storing your consciousness in the body of another. I assure you, it is perfectly safe and allows for our guests to experience true immersion as they enjoy the night’s festivities”. Felix was so caught up in the grandeur of the room that he almost failed to catch the man’s meaning.

“You’re going to put me into someone else’s body?”, he said, his voice a bit shaken.

“In a matter of speaking, yes, sir. The altered state is temporary and there are absolutely no side-effects. You will be in complete control of your faculties as you enjoy the night through the eyes of another. Of course, you are free to decline. We will, unfortunately, have to revoke entry from your companion as well, however, as we require that an equal number of guests participate”. Felix thought for a moment, trying to wrap his head around the idea of it. His gut was telling him to leave, but he couldn’t help but think of Lucy’s excitement. If he agreed and she said no, then he would be removed as well. Felix decided to put the choice in Lucy’s hand.

“Alright. Yeah, I’ll do it”, Felix said, watching the reflection as the attendant lowered the device over his head. It was a bit snug, but the padding inside made it comfortable at least. The man flipped a few switches on the machine and began to power it up.

“Okay, sir, you may feel a bit drowsy for a moment. This is perfectly natural and there is nothing to be concerned about”. He turned a dial on the machine and it started to light up.

“Don’t you need to wait for Lucy’s answer? In case she doesn’t want to do it?”, Felix said, his nerves building up in his chest. The man pointed to a large green light on the wall of the room.

“Miss Lucy has been an honored guest at the Chateau before. She has simply been waiting for your choice, sir”.

“Felix struggled against his fight or flight response as he began to feel the weight up his eyelids rapidly increasing. After only a few moments, his head began to drop forward and a wave of lethargy overcame him. There was a flash of light and a moment of weightlessness before the drowsiness wore off and his eyes fluttered open once again. He looked up at the attendant standing beside him, but rather than the gentleman he had just spoken to, there was an older woman in a black dress operating an identical machine. She looked over at Felix, realizing that he had woken up.

“Ah, very good, Miss, would you like to plan your makeup first, or shall we start with your outfit?”. Felix looked at her, confused, as he realized that the various suits and tuxedos around the room had been replaced with dresses, skirts, and blouses. When he turned his head to the mirror that sat in front of him, the new reality snapped into place. Sitting in the chair in the reflection wasn’t a man in a maroon shirt and a gray jacket, but a young woman with short, wavy brown hair in a red dress. His eyes widened as he put a hand, now far smaller and more delicate, up to his face. “I take it that this is your first time at the Chateau then?”, she said, smiling politely as Felix inspected the curvature of his face.

“I’m- I’m a woman”, he said, astonished.

“Yes, our guests are all randomly paired for the evening in order to create a true sense of mystery and to encourage everyone to play their roles emphatically. No guests will know your real identity, so you may act with full anonymity for the night”. He smiled in the mirror, even finding the facial muscles of his new body unfamiliar. “Now, unfortunately, we are drawing close to five o’clock, so we should get you ready with haste. Here is your character card. You may reference it whenever you need to throughout the night”. She handed Felix a small laminated card with a short, bulleted list of descriptors. Trained Pianist. Confident. Enjoys Opera, Tennis, and Ballet. Felix chuckled, imagining himself trying to get Lucy to attend the opera with him. As he read the card, his nervousness was spinning into excitement about the night ahead. On the back of the card, the word RUMOR was printed in bold letters. I heard someone having an argument just before the body was found. When I looked to see who it was, all I found was a silver cuff link in the room where the voices had been. His heart started to race as he embodied the character. Felix looked back to the mirror and stood up. He was shorter now than even Lucy, but this body’s figure was curvy and well-shaped. He smiled in the mirror again, this time feeling much more natural.

“Alright, let’s start with my makeup”.

An old grandfather clock chimed as five o’clock rolled around. Felix walked through the door at the end of the room and followed the rose-colored carpet down to the main parlor where everyone was gathered. On his way, he caught one more glance of himself in a hanging mirror. He had dressed up in a sapphire blue dress with matching jewelry and a beautiful lapis lazuli colored eye shadow. He could only see the top of his newfound bust in the mirror, but he walked the rest of the way with a confident and elegant gait. When he arrived at the parlor, a tall man in a regal looking suit had just begun descending the long master staircase. He stopped at the middle landing and addressed the crowd.

“Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen, to my humble estate. I and all of the Chateau Félicité staff are ever so grateful that you could join us and we anticipate another splendid evening. Dinner will begin shortly, please mingle and enjoy yourselves while the dining room is prepared”. The energetic host made his way down the stairs and towards the dining room while the rest of the guests began to socialize. Felix was stricken with embarrassment when he realized just how much shorter he had become. Not only was shorter than his usual self, but even the majority of the female guests seemed to stand a few inches taller than him. Still, something excited him about the fact that nobody knew who he was as he sauntered across the marble floor in tall, glittering heels.

He crossed paths with a waiter carrying a tray of champagne and gladly accepted a glass. He still felt a bit nervous, but he recalled the second bullet point of his card. Just be confident, he thought to himself. Felix took a deep breath as the waiter made his way through the party. In his view, now unobstructed, was a gorgeous woman with fiery red hair and a strapless red dress with beautiful lace. She had a slit that traveled halfway up her dress and a corsage fastened to her wrist with roses and baby’s breath. Felix exhaled sharply and made his way over to her. She was tall, and her heels made her that much more intimidating. Felix smiled at her and outstretched his hand.

“Hello there, my name is Brynn”, he said. She slowly looked him up and down, smiling back and taking his hand gently.

“I’m Viola. It’s lovely to meet you. Tell me, what brought you here tonight”, she said, her blue eyes shining in the gentle light of the manor. Felix tried to think but was distracted by her smile. He reached into the silver purse that he wore on his arm for his card, but Viola reached out and placed her hand on his. Felix looked up at her and her eyes narrowed curiously. Her ruby red lips turned up in the corner as she smirked at the nervous girl before her. “No, what brought you here”, she repeated in a sultry tone. Felix thought for a moment.

“I wanted something new. Something I had never seen before”, he said in a low voice, now, more confident as they locked eyes.

“And have you found it?”, she replied, cocking her head to the side. Felix realized that her hand was still resting on his, but the warmth of her skin was tantalizing. He opened his mouth to answer but was interrupted by the frantic calls for attention that were coming from the staircase. Felix and Viola turned to see a butler, out of breath, who was standing on the tall staircase.

“Attention! Please, everyone, I need your attention- The master of the house has been… has been found dead!”. The crowd gasped and Felix had to admit that his performance was rather stirring. “He was found with a bloody knife in his back in the game room. We’ve locked the doors to prevent the killer from escaping, but now we must find whoever is responsible for this heinous crime!”. Right away, the crowd began to murmur, exchanging notes and theories. Felix turned back to Viola as a handsome man with a cane approached her.

“Pardon me, Miss, but I couldn’t help but notice your radiance from across the parlor. Would you allow me to accompany you this evening. For protection, of course”. He put forth his hand and made a small bow to her. Felix looked up at the man, once again reminded of his height.

“Thank you, that’s very kind of you, but I was just in the middle of a most fascinating conversation with my friend, here. You’ll have to excuse us”. Viola took Felix’s arm and led him to the other end of the parlor. When they reached a relatively private spot, they both began to laugh. Felix gestured out his hand towards Viola.

“Would you like to accompany me this evening, miss”, he said in a mocking tone as they continued to laugh. Suddenly, Viola’s face took on a deadly serious expression as she took Felix’s hand and brought it to her lips. She kissed the back of his hand and looked down into his eyes.

“Why, yes. It would be my pleasure”. The two of them smiled at each other as the party began in earnest.

After a few hours of deciphering the patterns of fake blood and over-acted monologues, the party came to the conclusion that it was, in fact, the butler. The final nail in the coffin was actually presented by Felix when he noticed that the butler was wearing a silver cuff link on his left cuff, but none on his right. The guests rejoiced with another round of drinks and the party slowly began winding down to its conclusion. The guests waited for the host to come and announce the end of the night, but a strange tension filled the air as the party dragged on. Felix looked to Viola for answers. She furrowed her brow just as the music stopped playing. The host finally appeared at the top of the stairs looking a bit disheveled.

“Hello everyone. We want to thank you very much for participating tonight. Now, I have a brief announcement to make so everyone should stay put until the end. It seems that, sometime over the course of the night, our CMT Machines were tampered with”. A deathly silence fell over the crowd. “Worse still, the Transmission Plates that enable the machines to function seem to have been stolen. We cannot return you to your correct bodies tonight”. Dread and panic filled the party guests as everyone frantically searched for their own bodies. Felix’s stomach sank at the news, but he did his best to remain calm. Viola looked at Felix, her mysterious and confident guise now fallen.

“What are we going to do?”, she said. Felix scanned around the room until he spotted himself. “Here, follow me. I see my body, then we can find yours”. Felix led Viola to the area beside the grand staircase where he found the guest currently controlling his body.

“Wait”, Viola said, stopping as Felix made it to his body. “Felix?”. He turned back to Viola. How could she have known my-

“Lucy?”, he said, confused and a bit overwhelmed. The realization had barely sunk in when Felix’s voice drew his attention.

“Hi, um, you have my body. Here, this is my phone number”. She took out a pen from Felix’s pocket and wrote her number on his hand. “That way we can reach out to each other while they fix this”.

“Okay, yeah, thank you”, Felix said, turning his head back to where Viola, where Lucy had been standing. He found her exchanging information with the person controlling her body just as he had. She turned back to Felix, a hint of anxiety in her eye.

“What do we do now?”, she asked. Felix looked around at the scrambling crowd around them.

“Come on, let’s go home. We’ll figure this out later”, he said, taking her hand and leading her back down the hallway they had come from. They collected their things and made their way down the driveway towards Felix’s car. When he got in, he found that his feet couldn’t reach the pedals and he could hardly see the road. Lucy laughed while he begrudgingly moved his seat forward and adjusted the height to fit his new proportions.

“It’s not that funny”, Felix said, the sting of embarrassment hot against his cheeks. Lucy tried to stifle the last of her amusement.

“I mean, it is kind of funny, right?”, she said. Felix was trying his best to process everything that had happened. His mind kept drifting to everything Lucy had said to him. Viola, he corrected himself. Everything that happened in there was just them pretending. Every time he glanced over, expecting to see Lucy, he saw Viola. His emotions swirled and collided inside of him as they pulled into the driveway outside of their apartment. There was a clear awkwardness between them now that the panic had subsided. They had been flatmates for two and a half years now, but they weren’t Felix and Lucy right now. They were strangers. No, that wasn’t it either. The intimacy and familiarity that existed in his mind paired with the strangeness of being unable to recognize her confused him. In some way, he felt like they were ex-lovers. Partners who had drifted apart and were now somehow best friends and strangers at the same time. They walked into the living room and sat on the couch. Felix leaned back and realized that his feet barely touched the floor. Lucy sat in the recliner across from him and turned on the standing lamp beside her. The room was deathly quiet.

“This is weird”, she said from across the room. All of the emotions that had been brewing beneath the surface seemed to burst out as Felix erupted in laughter. He didn’t know why it struck him as being so funny, but the sound of his own high pitched, feminine laugh only served to heighten the hilarity for him. Lucy, staring at a woman who was no taller than five foot four, laughing hysterically and clutching her sides on the couch, was compelled to do the same. They laughed in that empty apartment for minutes, pointing to each other’s newly acquired shapes as the absurdity of it all suddenly hit them.

“I did tell you that I wanted to lose some weight, Felix said, feeling the firmness of his now flat, smooth stomach. Once again, Lucy started to laugh, and though the voice wasn’t hers, Felix recognized the joy that it carried. When they had each caught their breath, they just stared at each other, smiling. “I guess we should get out of these clothes”, Felix said, looking down at his blue sequined dress. “Do you have anything that I could wear?”. Lucy stood up from the chair.

“Yeah, I’ve got some pajamas that your mom sent me last Christmas. They were a bit too small, but I think they should fit you”. Felix followed Lucy into her room where she was rummaging through the bottom drawer of her dresser. With a sudden, “Aha!”, she pulled a purple polka-dotted pair of fleece pants and a shirt that read “Sweetheart” across the front. Felix sighed, half smiling as he took the clothing. He was about to go to his room to put them on, but he saw Lucy stare at her closet forlorn.

“What’s wrong?”, he said as she dropped her head into her hand.

“What am I going to wear? This girl is a lot more… filled out than I am”. Felix started to crack up, causing Lucy to throw an empty hanger at him. “Hey, its not funny”, she said, furrowing her brow. Felix bent down and grabbed the hanger.

“I mean, it is kinda funny, right?”, he said, doing his best impression of her voice. Lucy sighed and smiled.

“Alright, I deserve that. Just come unzip my dress for me”. Felix put the pajamas on the hanger and hung it on the doorknob before making his way over to Lucy. He wasn’t used to her being taller than him, and without his heels, the difference was even starker. He unzipped the back of her dress which she immediately let fall away.

“Woah, what are you doing?”, Felix asked, shocked, and unsure if he should avert his eyes.

“Relax, it isn’t like this is my body, anyway. Just don’t look if it makes you uncomfortable”, she said. Her back was still to Felix as she grabbed a shirt from the closet. She wasn’t wearing a bra, and her lace panties hugged her hips tightly. He couldn’t help but look at her figure, soft and defined.

“I’m not uncomfortable, it’s just…”. He trailed off, his voice a bit sheepish. She pulled a white top over her shoulders and down, frowning when it only reached her navel. She then grabbed a pair of shorts from her dresser and pulled them up to her hips, struggling to get them up over her butt. After a short tug of war, she was victorious.

“Phew, alright, how do I look?”, she said, turning around to face Felix. His face was completely red as she turned to him. The white shirt was very short, and her nipples showed proudly through the thin cotton fabric. The shorts were a bit better fitting, though they still rode up higher in the back than anything she’d usually wear. Lucy noted his slack-jawed expression and rosy cheeks, returning a coy giggle. “I’ll take that as a compliment. Here, let me get your zipper”. She walked over behind Felix and unzipped the dress all the way to the bottom. Why am I so nervous, this isn’t even my body, Felix thought to himself. He shyly let the clothes fall to the floor, leaving him standing in just a pink bra and a very slim black thong. “Wow, whoever this is must have had quite the night planned”, she teased as Felix quickly spun around. He grabbed the pajamas and threw them on. He thought he saw her eyes dart up from his chest to his face, but he wasn’t sure.

“So, what do we do now?”, Felix asked. They folded up their fancy attire and then headed in to the living room again as Lucy applied her favorite peppermint chapstick. Felix sat on the end of the couch and Lucy took the spot beside him.

“I don’t know. I mean, who would steal something that is literally only used for these silly game nights?”. That question had been bothering Felix too. Why would someone go through the trouble of stealing every single plate?

“Maybe they wanted us to get stuck like this? I don’t know. Maybe we should reach out to the others”. Felix remembered the number on his arm and grabbed his phone. He punched in the number and drafted up a text. “Hey, my name is Felix. I don’t know a not-weird way to say this, but I’m the guy in your body”. He sent the message off and leaned back onto the couch. “Maybe some of the others know something. I mean, if that wanted to keep us in the wrong bodies, it must have been because they were after someone specifically, right?”. Felix turned to Lucy and caught her staring. She quickly looked away, blushing. “Hey, earlier tonight…”, he started, his voice floating softly in the warm glow of the lamplight.

“Yeah?”, she said, leaning closer to him. Their eyes were less than a foot apart from each other.

“I just wanted to say that I, uh- I had a really great time tonight, all things considering”. He could feel the warmth of her breath on his lips.

“Yeah. I did too”. Felix leaned forward a bit more, the smell of her perfume enticing him. Their lips were barely an inch apart when Felix pulled back just a bit.

“I’m sorry, we shouldn’t. I don’t know anything about this girl,” he said quietly, reflecting on his painted nails.

“You’re right, I’m sorry, let’s just-”, Lucy was cut off as Felix leaned forward and kissed her. Her lips were soft and she wrapped her arms around him. The heat of their skin combined in beautiful harmony for one electrifying moment. As they pulled away, nothing was said but everything felt a little new. They each smiled sheepishly as the phone buzzed on the table.

“This has to be the girl who has my body”, Felix said, grabbing his phone. He had three new messages.

“Hey, I’m Alyssa. Sorry that we didn’t get switched back. Thank you for messaging me, I was worried you’d lost my number”. Felix read Lucy the texts as he typed out his reply.

“Hi, Alyssa. We’re all going to figure this out together. My flatmate and I were just about to work on tracking down the other members of the party to figure out what to do next, even if it takes all night”. Felix stared at the phone screen, too nervous to look up at Lucy. He could still taste her lip balm.

“Well, that’s actually why I wanted to reach you. I’ve got a small favor to ask. Well, actually, it’s a pretty big one. For the last three months, I’ve been raising money for the local women’s college scholarship fund. The only thing is, in order to collect the donations I’m supposed to do this thing called the strip tank. It’s basically a big dunk tank, but every time someone donates they get to try and dunk the girl and if they do, she takes off a piece of clothing. I understand if you don’t want to participate but there are a lot of people counting on this money”.

Felix was shocked. He handed the phone to Lucy and dropped his head into his hands. He waited for her to burst out laughing, but instead, she put her hand on his shoulder.

“Hey, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. Seriously, it isn’t like you signed up to be trapped in her body”. Her genuine compassion caught him off guard.

“No, I do. I mean, I want to. I know how important that program is to the kids that can’t afford school without those scholarships. Hell, half of my students are there on scholarships”, Felix said. He stood up and walked to his room, Lucy following behind him. He lifted his shirt in the mirror, exposing his stomach and the curve of his hips. Lucy watched him, chuckling. “What are you laughing at?”, he said. She smiled at him.

“Doesn’t seem to matter what you look like, you’re always checking yourself out”, she teased. Felix started laughing with her. “Why don’t you turn in for the night, I’ll see what I can do about tracking down the others. You’re going to need your rest; big day tomorrow”. She started back towards the living room.

“Thanks, I really appreciate that”, Felix said. Lucy stopped in the doorway and turned back to him.

“Oh, and if I might offer some advice as somebody who has been in the strip tank before, bring a scarf and maybe some mittens. They’re a lot more accurate than you’d expect”. Lucy winked at Felix and headed out towards her room. He looked into the mirror again, his face flushed. She did the strip tank in college? He looked at his phone and started typing out his reply.

“Okay, I’ll do it. What time do I have to be there?”. In the solitude of his room, he couldn’t help but admit that he kind of like the way this felt. He turned out the light and got into his bed, exhausted and ready to get this day behind him. He could still catch the faint smell of peppermint, and he smiled as he dozed off to sleep.
