The year was 7003NE, seven thousand years after the founding of New Earth. Our old home lay abandoned, a cold and lifeless rock, still drawing circles around the dim ember we once called the Sun.
In an act of inspired desperation, a global space coalition was formed. Their mission? To discover a new home for mankind, and to relocate the human race before the heat death of our solar system. The sun was dying and, unless something changed, so would we.
A gargantuan space highway was formed, linking New Earth to old, across a 25,000 light-year expanse of dark and empty intergalactic space. This was no easy feat. Earth’s population now exceeded 14 billion residents, all jostling for the next flight out of here. Five of those residents belonged to one family, the Jones family, whom our story is about, coincidentally.
“Everyone got their space passports?” called the father, peeking his head over the hustle and bustle of the crowd as they filed towards the gates.
“Got it Dad!” called the twins in unison. Two daughters, aged 21 and 21. Obviously.
“Yeah, Dad, mine’s here” replied the son, the eldest at 25, waving his above the crowd.
“Alright kids” reassured the mother “Huddle together here, we don’t wanna get split up!”
The space highway comprised thousands upon thousands of flying cars, the size of a small bungalow, just big and comfortable enough to spend a *long, long* time in. Which was fortunate, because even with the advances made in hyper-space travel, the 25,000 light-year journey still took 7 years. Which is incredible, don’t get me wrong, it turns out those wormholes work *wonders* for non-euclidean space travel. But 7 years confined to a little government-sanctioned box could drive *anyone* to boredom.
Their parents filed through the gate first, always keeping a watchful eye on the three siblings. Nicki tussled her fingers through the volume of her afro hair, attempting to accurately recreate the instagram-worthy passport photo she’d managed months earlier. Her ‘older’ sister Sirena wore her hair down, and so spent more time adjusting the cute little crop top to show off her gorgeous glowing dark skin. As they both passed through the gate, retinas scanned and photos checked, their big brother Nate was the last to checkpoint. Standing 6’4” with a fine trimmed beard and muscular build, there was no chance they’d lose him in the crowd. The twin sisters on the hand, at just 5’0” were relieved to have not been crushed in the stampede. Just as he stepped up to the plate, a staff message chimed over the PA:
“Taxi ID 6068 capacity reached. All remaining family members must board the next flight. Please board 6068 now”
“What!?” exclaimed the mother “No, that’s not right! Excuse me, hi, excuse me!”. She frantically caught the attention of the gate security staff. “Sorry, but there’s a mistake, our flight 6068 should fit 5 people? That’s me, my husband, and our three children here”
“Ah, we apologise for the miscommunication here Mrs Jones” consoled the gate staff “This type of taxi has a capacity of 4 adults and 1 child, *or* 3 adults and 3 children. Unfortunately, as all your children are over 18, none of them register as children on our system. You have 5 adults.”
“So… what exactly does that mean?” presses the father.
“That means that we’ll be providing you a second taxi free of charge! I do hope the additional space and comfort are an acceptable consolation” reassured the staff
“Well… I suppose that does sound more comfortable…” considered their mother “But we can’t let Nate stay lonely for 7 years!”
“We’ll go with him!” call the twins, again in unison.
“Right, that’s settled. Girls, you wait on this platform with your brother until the next flight comes in to dock. We love you all so much, and be sure to call us tonight to let us know you’re all on your way after us”
“Got it, Dad. See you on the other side” replies Nate
After a round of warm family hugs, and embarrassing forehead kisses from mum, their parents step onto flight 6068, ready for the next 7 years before New Earth. The girls each grab their big (big) brother by the hand and skip onto Taxi 6069 as it comes in to hover for boarding.
And away they went.
The next 7 years were more eventful than any of them, or at the very least their parents, could have possibly imagined. Confinement for that space of time can drive some people mad, and for others it will only strengthen a loving bond. As it turns out, they did not get bored at all. As a matter of fact, they all enjoy the ride. *Very, very much.*
Seven years passed, and at long last mum and dad took their first weary steps out into the cold night air that greeted them on New Earth. This was it! Our new home, the one we’d only seen in holographic travel brochures up until now. Gosh it was big, space for billions of new residents, and a wholesome feeling of new beginnings filled their hearts.
That feeling grew into excitement, seeing their kids hovering over to dock after them. Flight 6069, permission to land. Their parents held hands, gripped with happiness at finally seeing their son and daughters in person after such a long time. You could have sworn a tear rolled down mums face as their door slid open with a puff of dry ice.
First, out stepped their son Nate, now 32, looking like a mature yet youthful grown man. Next came twins Nicki and Sirena, now 28 and 28. Obviously.
And lastly came their grand kids; 4 year old Lanie and 6 year old Max.

[OOC: While writing my several-chapter-long story The Breeding Machine, I thought it’d be healthy to check I’m not just writing lots, but writing good too. So I’ve tried my hand at a short story, and given myself less than an hour to write it. I wanted it to be short enough that every line can be scrutinised, and be a fulfilling, satisfying read in under 10 minutes.
The plot is definitely inspired by Doctor Who S3E3 – Gridlock, but I’ve arguably added some of the incest threesome dynamic. Loved that episode.
How did I do?
Love,
James]
