One Ruins, One revives [MF]

My favorite kind of bar is an empty one, and 19Hundred20 is almost always dead. It gets an older crowd in the evening, and drunk bachelorette parties at night, but noon til five is all mine, usually. A bad breakup brought me back home, tail tucked between my legs, and Nan the bartender poured me one on the house. I watched the swirling dust in the light coming through the windows, and felt clear-headed for the first time in weeks. I had sworn off romance completely; since Madeleine, pretty girls looked more like landmines, or plague carriers.

So when the door swung open and she took the stool next to mine, I acted like she didn’t even exist.

“Hey man, I’m having a shitty day, can I have a smoke?” I pushed the pack over, set my lighter beside it, and kept my eyes on the flatscreen.

“Thanks,” she said when she came back in, returning my lighter. I grunted in acknowledgement. We sat there silently for a while, and I could feel her eyes on me.

“Hey are you alright?” she asked.

“Just fine.”

“Am I bothering you?”

“Nope.” She was quiet for a few minutes.

“It’s just, normally when I’m in a bar I have to scrape guys off with a stick.”

“I’ve been house trained,” I said, which got half a laugh.

“Gimme your girlfriend’s number, will she teach me?” she joked. She must have seen my expression go dark.

“Oh shit, sorry dude. Bad breakup?”

“How’d you know?”

“Just a guess,” she said, taking a gulp of her beer.

“Yeah, I’m done with women after this last one.”

“That’s probably smart, no one to help spend your money.”

“Yay more for me!” Nan said as she walked by. We both laughed.

“So what happened?” she asked.

“It’s only been three weeks,” I said, “I don’t wanna talk about it.”

“Suit yourself. Wanna hear about my night?”

“Not really.”

“Tough titties.”

She proceeded to tell me how she came to visit some friends, who all flaked on her, and she ended up drunkenly pounding on a friend’s door at 3am looking for a place to crash.

“So I wake up in the middle of the night, and he’s grinding and putting his hands all over me.”

“Your friend sounds very friendly.”

“Tell me about it. I sat in his back yard all night. When I found my car, the effing keys are locked inside.”

“My ex dragged me halfway across the country, and after two months decided to tell me we weren’t right for each other.”

“Ouch. I hope the sex was good at least,” she laughed. A few memories pushed their way forward, sending chills through my body.

“Terrible actually,” I mumbled.

“Wait, you moved across the country for a cold fish? Are you like a masochist or something?”

“I mean, that part didn’t matter, I liked her.”

“Did you try telling her?”

“Are you serious?”

“I don’t mean tell her she sucks in bed, you tell her what you like.”

“Of course, but a lot of that was off-limits,” I shrugged. “Some stuff made her uncomfortable, and I just let it go.”

“Are we talking super kinky shit here? Cuz I kinda get that,” she droned.

“What? No, I’m not some creeper, just normal couple stuff.”

“Like…?” she leaned closer.

“Well, oral was the main thing.”

“Giving, you mean…”

“No, neither. Like not at all.”

“Maybe you’re just terrible at it,” she said, elbowing me in the ribs.

“Yeah that’s not it.”

“Well what else?” she asked.

“She hated trying new things. We always ended up doing the exact same thing.”

“What?”

“Get behind her and pull her hair. That’s all she liked.”

“Wow…”

I lost track of time as we traded stories about exes, their weird little quirks, and we were both laughing pretty hard when the evening crowd started trickling in.

“Ok, I’m starting to get dirty looks from the wives.”

“Yep, time to go.”

We left the bar and started walking without direction, and she stopped suddenly.

“So here’s my car,” she leaned over the windshield, eyeing the keys lying on the seat.

“I can call a locksmith,” I said, pulling out my phone.

“No it’s ok, my sister’s bringing the spare when she gets off work.”

“Good, it’s almost five.”

“Well, she doesn’t get off until 3am,” she sighed. “Bartender.”

“That sucks, so what are you doing til then?”

“Hanging out with some weirdo I met at the bar,” she grinned. I don’t know how I’d spent several hours talking to her, but this was the first time I’d actually looked her in the eye, or seen her face. She was dressed way down, but she was still stunning.

“This weirdo’s name is Alan,” we shook hands.

“Jill.”

“So, what did you say you do for a living?”

“Modeling, until recently. I just finished my law degree.”

“Well, Jill the model lawyer, I wish I could help you kill time, but I’ve got a puppy at home. If he doesn’t get fed he’ll chew through the walls.”

“Hey, don’t worry about it, I’ll find something to do. Nice meeting you,” she started walking, and waved one time over her shoulder.

I got to my car, turned the ignition, and pulled onto the street. When I rounded the block, I saw her waving me down.

“Sorry,” she came up to my window, “mind if I have a couple more smokes? It’s gonna be a long night.” Her smile tried to make light of it, but I could tell she felt pretty miserable.

“Listen, I don’t want to leave you stranded out here,” I leaned over and unlocked the passenger door. “You can get something to eat at my place, get a nap or a shower if you want.” I watched her shoulders slump, and realized how tired she must be, and how hard she must have been hiding it.

“That would be so amazing. But you promise not to lock me in your creeper basement right?”

“It’s under rennovation right now, you’re safe.” As I drove Jill nodded off against the window. I found myself taking the turns slowly as not to wake her, and pulled into my garage before the sun fully set. The garage door woke her, and then she called my name through the dark.

“It’s alright,” I told her, opening the door and letting in some light. The truck door shut, and I let her find her way into the house.

I saw a chubby ball of fur come bounding toward me, but when it caught sight of Jill she squealed like a little girl, and the little fluff went straight into her arms. I went through the house tidying up while Jill suffered the unbearable cuteness. My place was small, but cozy, and the floor space wasn’t choked with extra furniture. The kitchen led to the living room’s single sofa, which led to the bed and bath. Jill coddled the puppy while I cooked, and her eyes began to droop halfway through eating.

“Hey,” I patted her knee, “go lay down.” I tugged her gently to her feet. “The sheets are clean. I’ll wake you up in time to get a shower, k?” I closed the door and went out for a smoke, thinking about Madeleine and how I’d wasted all that time, and here I was starting from scratch, taking in a stray because I was grasping for anything that gave my life meaning.

The summer heat just sticks around on the coast, and the nights don’t get any cooler. I sweated on the couch, and sweated when I went out to smoke, and pretended I wasn’t miserable for a couple of hours. The only fan was in the bedroom, but I knew it didn’t make it any cooler.

“It’s so effing hot.” Jill stood at the patio door, the blanket wrapped loosely around her.

“Can’t sleep?” I asked.

“Woke up sweating my ass off, so I threw my clothes off,” she sulked. “Didn’t make the slightest difference.”

“Whoa, I don’t know how I feel about some strange woman being naked in my bed,” I teased. In the darkness I could still tell that she rolled her eyes.

“Oh please, it’s been like three weeks since you broke up.”

“Before we started fighting actually…”

“When was that?” she asked.

“About six months ago? I think?”

“I’m sorry, that’s really shitty,” she said, putting a hand on my shoulder. “About the fighting I mean, it sounds like hell.” We stood in the darkness and the heat, listening to the crickets for a while.

“Okay,” she turned toward the door, “I’ll try to sleep a little longer.” I watched the corner of the blanket trail after her, and lit another smoke off the other. I settled back on the couch and dozed as much as I could in the sticky heat.

“Are you awake?” Jill was sitting on the couch still wrapped in her blanket, lit by the dull kitchen bulb.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.Hot.”

“I know, I’m sorry,” I sat up. “Do you want me to take you back?” She didn’t answer. She looked like she was trying to make up her mind. “I don’t mind, let’s go.”

She stood, and then she took a few steps closer. For a long moment I watched her looking down at me. And then the blanket fell, and her arms fell to her sides. A strange sensation crept in, as I sat there looking at her bare skin, that I’d never seen a woman look so unselfconscious. Every woman I’ve known acts a little ashamed, or unsure of herself and her body. Jill seemed so relaxed, so powerful, even as she wiped away the beads of sweat between her breasts.

She climbed slowly onto the couch, feet planted to either side of me, and began to lean forward. I watched her spread her legs a little farther apart, and felt her soft lips slide across mine. Our eyes were locked, and when her tongue slid slowly out of her mouth, so did mine. She tasted like summer and salt water, and the moment I sucked her soft flesh between my lips i felt her body shudder. She sank into my lap gasping, our foreheads pressed together, and her fingers unclasped my belt. Her fingertips stroked me just once, and then she pushed me down on the couch. Her knees sank into the cushion on either side of my head, and then I felt her mouth around me all at once, like a plunge into a hot spring’s surface.

I reached for her hips, pulling her body against mine, and covered her with my mouth. Her body began convulsing almost immediately, and when she came, her throat closed tight. She sat up gasping for air, my face still pressed between her legs, her hips rocking back and forth. I felt her weight shift forward, the sweat from her cheeks slick against my face as she stroked my tongue up the length of her crack. I heard her moaning, her hands pulling my jeans over my ankles.

Jill crawled forward, turned her body around, and pulled me inside of her using both hands. I watched her mouth open and her eyes close, and she began to rub her fingers between her splayed legs. She began to shake, body constricting around me, clenching so hard it was almost painful. She fell forward, breasts heaving against my chest, still moaning softly.

“Take me,” she whispered into my neck, “I want you to.”

I slid out from beneath her, and when i stroked my hand across her backside, she tucked her knees and pressed her thighs against mine. She almost appeared to be sleeping, her face resting against the cushion, but she gasped when I pushed inside her. I started slowly, but she looked back at me over her shoulder.

“I said take me,” she growled, and the smack of her ass against my thighs drowned out her cries of pleasure. I expected her to come almost immediately as she had before, but it was like she was holding it back, letting it build. Suddenly she arched her back, and watching her limbs shake brought me over the edge. Just before I came, her muscles clenched like a vise. I couldn’t move, and her grip kept me from release, and all I could do was ride the longest climax I’d ever had, our hips locked together.

She finally relaxed, and I came over and over again inside her like it would never end. I fell back on the couch, trying to catch my breath, and saw her stand on weak legs. She threw one leg over me and straddled my chest, and I watched as she spread her soft lips with two fingers, and my cum dripped down across my chest, inches from my face. She bent over and licked, her eyes never leaving my face, swallowing each tongue-full and licking her lips.

We fell asleep drenched in each other’s sweat, and when the sun rose it began to rain. We crept outside and let the downpour wash over us, and when it got too cold we made love again, shivering beneath the storm and ecstasy.

  1. I like your style. It’s not the same, but it made me think of Robert Parker and the Spencer detective stories.
