I was around the age of twenty- one. I had been working at a bar for three months at the time I got the invitation for the party. There was to be a barbeque and – for the ones that so desired – a camping place to stay the night at. Tents to sleep in and wood for the bonfire were taken care of, they said, but I, frankly, didn’t care. I was going, no matter what. I couldn’t miss this opportunity to get to know the whole family of the bar. I knew who would be coming to the get-together. A lot of friends of the company, colleagues, friends, and… Lisa. Lisa above all. I knew she would be coming. I heard her talking to some of her friends a few days earlier.
I was disappointed the first few hours of the party. She wasn’t there. But, at some point, when we were sitting around the fire with the remaining bunch, I saw her. We were talking about some political French guy who was acting out on the government when she entered the circle.
‘Hi, guys. Sorry I’m so late.’
Everyone greeted her, of course. Everyone loved her. The boss spoke well of her and the guys who worked with me in the back of the kitchen could only talk about how “sexy” she was dressed that day. The thing was, and this was something of an obstacle for me, I did not know her. At all. I wanted to. God knows I wanted to. But I didn’t. My task – that drunken night at the bonfire – was to get to know her.
Guys, I Think I can already spoil this maybe. I really did get to know her.
She walked my way. The only empty spot was next to me, so that seemed obvious. She was wearing a black dress with boots. Why, God, would someone wear a black dress that didn’t even cover ones knees when sleeping on grass? I didn’t know the answer to that, but I did know that I thanked God that very instant for giving some women foolish premonitions about camping. The skin of her legs wavered in the soft flames. Her brown hair flowed carelessly in the evening wind. She wasn’t wearing a bra. I could see. I think everyone could see. She greeted me with a shy nod and then sat down next to me. Her body peeked out at me through that black dress of hers as she kneeled down.
We talked that night. First to get to know each other, then to get to *know* each other. Hours went by and slowly but steadily, people started to retreat to the tent to get their sleep. At some point, we ended up with only five. I didn’t know the three guys at the other side of the fire. Neither did I feel the urge to. Lisa was at my side, and she was laughing. That was enough.
‘I’m going for a quick smoke. I’ll be right back.’ She said to me. When she stood up, she touched my hand and somehow I saw this to be caress – again, I was pretty drunk – so I followed her.
‘I’ll join you.’
She looked at me in silence and then continued walking towards the shadows of the field.
‘Wouldn’t want anyone to get lost tonight.’ I said with a cringe running down my spine.
‘Do you smoke?’ She asked me at the edge of the meadow.
*No.*
‘Yes’
We shared that moment in silence, gaze on the grassy horizon. Everything was quiet, even the guys from the fire couldn’t be heard from where we were standing. I figured there was not much to lose. I laid down on the grass. The fringes of green hugged my eyesight. I thought of the Lion King.
‘Join me. We’ll have the stars for a bit and then return to the fire.’ I said.
She hesitated a moment, but then joined.
There was only silence between us, but not of the awkward kind. It was pleasant. And right on the moment when I thought I could find my sleep next to this beautiful girl, I felt something. She had turned around and put her head on my chest. I felt her hair in my mouth, her hand on my hip. I can faintly remember having hatched the idea in the back of my head that she wanted to sleep like this. I did not react on that egg. Instead, I turned her over. She was on her back now and I was leaning over her. There was not a trace of surprise in her eyes, though. There was only a smile, glowing in the fire.
‘It’s a wonder I haven’t noticed you before, Daniel.’ She said.
‘Don’t worry about it.’
I kissed her. And she kissed me back. First timidly, like a first sip of tea. But then we grew into each other. I could feel the heat of the light like a blanket around my shoulders. Her legs were intertwined with mine, her breasts were pressed against my chest. With every kiss, her hips arched upward from the ground. Her body was moving for me. And mine was likewise moving for her. I felt the bulge between my legs growing, thumping with blood. I could feel her enjoying it. When she got rid of my shirt, I got rid of her dress. As I pulled that piece of black skin off of her, I looked at her. Her hair was in a chaos and her teeth were trying to destroy her lower lip. She pulled me closer.
First I felt her smile growing against my lips, then:
‘I want you.’
…
I slithered out of my pants. I got rid of the remaining pieces of her clothing. I swung her bra far, I remember now, and its shadow leaped along the trees that surrounded the field in a triumphant march. Her breast were more than one hand could handle. Her stomach was flat, perfect, and ran into her legs like stomachs are supposed to do. She waited for me. Teeth still on lips, eyes still in anticipation.
‘Condom?’ I asked.
She shook her head violently and pulled me onto her. There was a brief glance to the black figures at the fire. They had no clue. Then I turned to her, and looked her in the eyes as I slowly… very slowly… Her eyes closed in happy half-moons and a moan escaped her mouth. I pushed all of my inches into her. She accepted them all. I told her we should be quiet. She responded with an infallible: ‘No.’
We fucked like that. Her breasts moving in my rhythm, her moans sounding with my thrusts. Her hands, sometimes, went to her hair went she was close, pulling at it. Some of her fingers disappeared in her mouth. Some of them disappeared in mine. She scratched my back open and yelled out ‘Fuck, Daniel.’ As she did. There was a moment when she tensed. Her eyes shot open and she looked at me.
‘Dan–’ Then they sprung shut again. There were only moans after. Her hands moved franticly to get hold of the grass that was surround us. Her hips shot me all kinds of direction. I felt her insides tighten and I – and this is just me loving a girl to come beneath me – came immediately after that. I held her like that and we came to our normal breathing with me still inside her. Then we collapsed. Our sweaty bodies were cleaned by the sweet evening wind. It was a summer’s wind. We smoked another cigarette and looked at the stars. I thought about saying something like, ‘we are so fucking tiny, aren’t we?’ but conversation wasn’t needed. Besides that summer breeze, nothing was.
