I first met Kate when I was 12 or 13 and she was a year and grade older. Our sisters were put on the same soccer team. At the time I was very much an asshole, as most 13 year olds are, and well, she was kinda pudgy, so I didn’t have much interest in her. She was as sweet as she could be, though. We’d talk during games and such, then one day she gave me a note in the hallway at school and I avoided her like the plague.

Fast forward about 7 years and I’m just getting unpacked into my new barracks room at Fort Polk and I get a Facebook message from her. Nothing special, just saying that she ran into my sister and heard I was in the army and stuff, wished me luck and what not. I mull it over for a second, but decide not to respond because there were just too many red flags.

One night that fall I was buzzing pretty hard on cheap beer at deer camp and she messaged me again asking when I would be in town again. I told her and next thing I know were texting til midnight. 4:30 came earlier than usual, so I decided to go sit in one of our box stands I knew I had a heater, and, more importantly, signal. I found out she had moved to a different state so her family could watch her daughter while she went go to school, and that she called off the engagement but was still trying to work things out with her baby daddy. She said she would be in town thanksgiving weekend, so we made plans to meet up and have a drink or two then.

A month and a half and 3 dead deer later, I’m home for a 4 day weekend on thanksgiving. My family wraps up thanksgiving supper, and I had plans with my buddies. Well, one wouldn’t answer and one skipped town to go to his deer camp. I didn’t feel like going home so as a last ditch effort to keep me from going home and drinking I messaged Kate. She was in town, and said she’ll be back to her friends house in a bit. I pull up to the place she’s staying and wait for her to come out.

When she finally does I had to pick my jaw up off my floor board. She was gorgious. I’ve always joked that Miranda Lambert would be my celebrity crush if she wasn’t so crazy. I meet the 3 of them at the restaurant, and she introduced me to them. Turns out I’d known both of them for a while. As we’re walking out Danielle turns to Kate and says “Don’t catch a cramp!” They both laugh while me and Danielle’s boyfriend just look at each other and shrug.

We drive around talking and listening to music when she turns to me and says “Hey, why don’t we go down to the lake. I haven’t been there in forever.” Up to this point I’ve been playing it cool, trying not to show that she was taking my breathe away. We walk down the dock to a bench and we sit and watch the water. She kept inching closer to me til finally I pick her up and sit her on my lap. Problem was that as soon as I did that i got rock hard. I could tell she was trying to play it off, then she turned to me and said “my hands are cold” and grabbed mine. I stood up, backed her up against the edge of the dock and said “let’s head back to the truck.”
