The Art of Basic Affection [mf]

(Short, softcore poem about intimacy that’s missing from casual hook-ups. Not hot and heavy like some of the others in here, but the kind of stuff that raises my heart-rate. If there’s a better place to post this let me know.)

The boys took me out for a drink
“You’ve had too much time to think”
Good intentions couldn’t erase my broken heart
“We’ll teach you, picking up ladies is an art”

They laughed and discussed the girls nearby
Who they’d rate low, who they’d rate high
My mind was elsewhere, as was my heart
“I suppose leaving my home is a good start”

My words went unheard, their fun was unaltered
I stepped out for a smoke to avoid the awkward
Looking up into the sky, taking a deep inhale
I resisted the urge to release a wail

A few feet to my left, I saw the spark of a light
It was possible something beautiful could happen tonight
Her curls swayed with the wind, her eyes gazing the stars
A beauty so timeless, described in memoirs
