I was pretty sure that was the last box.
My Aunt May had helped us cram every container Betty and I could reasonably fit into her car, and had hauled all of it–and us–upstate to our first day of college. We’d gotten everything out of there in fairly short order, once we’d been given clear instructions where our dorm was. Aunt May, whose excitement and energy level rivaled our own, helped us get everything out, and was just about to help us crack open boxes when I held up a hand.
“It’s okay, May,” I said, using my most innocent sweet college boy tone. “We’ll take care of the actual unpacking!”
My aunt, whose slim figure belied more smooth curves than I was typically comfortable to notice, turned from the biggest box to us, pulling a long lock of chestnut hair away from her face. Her smile faltered slightly, and her brown eyes focused on me.
