Aaron had come over today just to hang out. We had been drinking a few beers, ciders, wine and whatever else we had around. The alcohol is beginning to have an impact on me. Maybe it even had an impact on me for a while. I am starting to feel a little tired, so I put my head on Daddy’s shoulder. He looks down at me with a loving smile. “Are you tired, sweetie?” “Not a lot. Just a tiny bit.”
I take a discreet sniff in. Daddy smells a bit like beer. I know he isn’t much of a beer guy, but he knows how the smell gets to me. “I’m sorry to hear what happened.” Daddy says, directed at Aaron. “Yeah. But it wasn’t going to work anymore. She wanted kids..” Aaron has an expression of emotional pain on his face. Daddy nods knowingly. “Sometimes that’s where life takes you. It’s not enough to love someone if they want something else out of life.” Aaron looks slightly embarrassed to talk about the topic. He can be a little awkward sometimes about personal matters. He fiddles a little with his beer can before downing the last bit. I sit up straight. “Would you like me to get you one more?” I ask. “Thanks, but I can get it myself,” he says.
