When I was a Junior in Highschool, I had a friend in band with me named Jason. He and I played trombone together and he was the section lead that year, cause he was the only senior we had. Living where we did, Band actually was a big deal, if only because football was such a bigger one. We took our marching seriously, and started working on it as soon as we were allowed. That’s a lot of hot summers, marching on blacktop for hours at a time.
When we started that year, Jason and I got together and made a decision. Unlike the other sections of our band, we’d make sure the freshmen players never had to walk back to the band hall after field practice. It made us pretty popular with the underclassmen. It also made me feel pretty good, like I had a part in making the band better for at least a few people.
