“You are late,” Sigrid said in that scolding voice that came so naturally to her.

“It … it took some time. There were … things to do, and explain,” Mirja said.

Sigrid scoffed but let it go.

“Come. We’re already late.”

They headed in the other direction from the animancy building and Mirja was about to highlight this fact when she saw a dark figure further on.

“This is Samel,” Sigrid said as they got closer. “Samel. Mirja.”

Mirja nodded at the man. He was a tall, lanky thing with a long beard. He looked like one of the sailors that you found by the craps tables down at the docks.

“Pleasure to meet you miss,” he said with an exaggerated bow.

“Samel works for Master Olgric. And has agreed to let us into the laboratory.”

Mirja raised an eyebrow. She could not see the man’s face very clearly in the dim light from the lanterns.

**The Deal**

It was a beautiful summer day in southern Sweden. The sun shone down from a clear blue sky while I was driving along the fields in my BMW M6 Cab. I had only owned it for a couple of weeks and I was heading from my summer house outside of Kivik into work in Lund. When I was closing in on Loberod I remembered that there was a little Thai food wagon there that served an excellent fried rice. I drove into the small town that most people just passed through if they even knew that it existed. After a couple of hundred yards I saw the food wagon. It stood just where it used to, it must have been two years since I last ate there. I pulled up the car to the curb and stepped out. Two wooden tables with benches were placed just next to the wagon and two teenage girls sat there drinking Coke.

”Nice car”, said the first girl.

The City in the City – A Freeuse Series – Part 1 – Judge & Jury

“Would the defendant please stand.”

Cathy felt her stomach clench but did as she was told. She looked over at the jury, their eyes were all locked on her. She knew this was only going one way. Pulling one strand of forlorn blonde hair behind one ear, like she always did when she was nervous, she awaited what was to come.

“What is your verdict?” the judge asked.

The fat man who was the head juror looked straight at her.

“Guilty.”

The judge nodded.

“We thank the jury for its service and reconvene in one hour for sentencing,” the judge said, letting the gavel fall.

Cathy’s heart sank. She knew her chances had been slim to none with the all-male jury, but she had at least hoped.

“All rise.”

She stood up and felt her lawyer’s hand on her shoulder.

“The DA wants to talk to you, if you agree to.”

“Why?” Cathy said looking at her lawyer.

Sally was a middle-aged woman that had kept most of her charms and dressed almost as a young woman with that ample cleavage.

Fifteen

Mirja spent the next three days trying to cram in as many hours as possible reading the book Sigrid had brought her. She had questioned the Sister about how in the seventh she had been able to get access to the restricted section of the Library, but the woman had been as silent as a Scriptomancer in training. Finally, Mirja had given up and Sigrid had left to do whatever it was she was doing at night while Mirja was normally sleeping. She didn’t have time for that now, so she drew a little extra from Jarl’s bond to stay awake all through the night.

“Mirja,” Mistress Lorelee’s voice came sharply. “Are you sleeping?”

Mirja opened her eyes and looked up at the Mistress. Next to her she could see a few of the other girls smiling.

“No,” Mirja said shaking her head. “I was just contemplating.”

“Next time you … contemplate,” Lorelee said. “I would suggest that you avoid snoring.”

The Eclipse Annals – Part 11 [Freeuse][Scifi]

Eleven – Firsts & Seconds

“What an absolute beauty,” the handsome young man said with a sigh.

Master Engineer Sarah Fawkes looked over at him. They had been standing side by side for almost fifteen minutes now, but these were the first words out of any of their mouths. She deliberated for a few seconds to find a proper answer but the only thing that came out was a pathetic:

“Yes.”

The massive spaceship was slowly sliding into the docking bay with millimeter precision. Sarah knew this because she had been leading the design team that oversaw the lidar tracking beacons of all Behemoth class ships in the fleet. The Eclipse was one of them. And it was actually the first time Sarah had seen any of her designs in action.

“I was so happy when I got picked for the Eclipse,” the young man continued.

Sarah studied him for a second. He was wearing an Ensign’s uniform and looked like he was fresh out of the academy. Probably not more than nineteen. More than a decade younger than her. She bit her lip.

“Are you meeting someone on the ship?” the boy asked.

“My lady Mirja,” duke Leopold said taking her hand, kissing it.

“My lord Wissgretch,” Mirja said curtsying deeply.

She looked up at the young duke. He looked nervous. She decided to make it easy for him. She stepped in and went up on her toes to give him a light kiss on the lips.

“I …” he began.

“Shall we sit down?” Mirja asked.

The duke nodded and they sat down on the sofa. They were once again in the hummingbird chamber and the little birds chanted their soothing songs through whatever magic made it possible.

“How have you been?” Mirja said with a smile.

The angular faced duke looked at her and she almost thought he was going to cry.

“I … I’ve been completely lost without you. My uncle forbade me to see you again, you see. But I defied him!”

He almost shouted the last words as if to make them real. Mirja just smiled.
