The clock flashed 12:15 when Sally had finally gone to sleep. George could barely keep his eyes open, he was not a night owl. His first Halloween at the new house had been fun. All of the neighborhood kids had run around in their cool costumes and thankfully everyone got their treats so nobody had needed to trick him.
Sally’s bag had been so full that she had accidentally dropped candy all the way to her room. George unwrapped one of the forgotten morsels and popped it into his mouth while he walked to the lounge. Mint, his favorite. He was about to switch on the TV to catch a movie when there was a knock at the door. ‘This late?’ he thought to himself as he checked his wristwatch. He made his way to the door and swung it open to be greeted by Elizabeth, his next door neighbor. “Hey Liz,” George said quizzically,”Is something wrong?”
Liz had her pink sleeping gown draped over her shoulders and her blonde locks in a messy bun on top of her head. George had been fond of her ever since she brought a pie and some wine over when they first moved in. She was also a single parent who had been through a rough divorce and seemed to know exactly what to say to George to make him feel better.
