Arrangments M/F

— This is an excerpt from a book I just self published. This scene follows one in which Daniel, the husband, along with his best friend Jared, confesses that the two of them shared a woman while they were serving in the Navy. Jane, Daniel’s wife, reacts to that story. I hope you like it! —-

Jane let out a long, slow breath after Jared stopped speaking. She was laying back against her husband’s chest, his arm around her. Finally, she said, “Was that the last time that you guys saw Ash?”

Shaking his head, Jared said, “No, we hooked up with her a few more times. Eventually, she got a job in Indiana, and moved. It was too bad.”

“I’d imagine. She sounds like she was exactly what you two were looking for.” Jane tried to keep her voice steady, and wondered if Daniel could feel her heart beating as hard as it was. She was suddenly hyper aware of how much of her long legs were exposed by her shorts, and the number of times that Jared’s eyes had flicked down to them. She finished the rest of her drink, her head spinning gently, feeling the warm sense of intoxication softening the edges of her view.

“Would you stop, baby?” Daniel asked, watching his wife gather up a pile of books from the coffee table.

Jane shook her head, stuffing the books on one of the several bookshelves lining the living room. Pausing a moment, she adjusted the placement of the books so that the spines all lined up, presenting a unified front to the open studio apartment. “I’m nearly done. I just want…” She pushed a lock of brown hair back from her brow. “I want to make a good impression. I’ve never met any of them.”

Daniel crossed the room, kissing her on the cheek. “Believe me, you’ll make a good impression. This place will make a good impression. Jared’s apartment was a bit of a hole last time I saw it.”

“That’s not the point,” she replied. “He’s been through a lot. I want him to feel at home.”

“That’s going to be a problem.” Jane tossed him a frown, and Daniel shrugged. “I mean, I’m just trying to be honest. It’s not his home. It’s going to take a long, long time before any place can be home.”
