I went to a small town high school where sports were religion and everyone expected the athletes to represent our town well. Our school also still used corporal punishment, but it was pretty rare by the time we got to high school. My junior year, our girls basketball team played our rival school and had been getting bad calls the entire game, which really upset one of our star players (we’ll call her Becca). I remember that she was a tall, slim girl with sandy brown hair, big ears, and great calves. Becca was benched earlier in the game for angrily questioning a call from the ref (a respected member of our community) and when our coach (a late 30s, early 40s mother of two, who’s married to another coach) put her back in the game, she got into a fight, used profanity, got a technical foul, and was ejected. Our town admires athletes with heart, but our home crowd actually booed her behavior, shaming our team.
