I watched the confrontation from my bedroom window. My mom tried to pull me away, but I wouldn’t let her. Her eyes were glued to the scene below as well. My father and Jack staring down Sherif Williams and his two deputies. Fear clutched my chest as I watched, but relief soon followed as I watched the Sherif and his men leave.
My father said something to Jack, and I could only imagine what it was. Guilt slowly crept up on me as I remembered what my last words to Jack had been. I felt awful. He was guilty of nothing other than protecting me. I watched him walk away towards the bunkhouse.
I knew I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t help myself. I turned from the window and found my boots lying on my bedroom floor. The white dress I had worn the night before was crumpled in the corner, soon to be taken to the trash. I knew I could never wear it again without remembering what Jake tried to do to me.
I slid my boots on, my sweat pants thinking inside them. As I ran downstairs, I heard my mother call after me, but I didn’t stop. My hair bounced free of its loose knot as I pulled the front door open and ran across the porch. In the distance, I saw Jack close the entrance to the bunkhouse, so I picked my pace up to a jog. My knee was still a bit sore from where I had fallen, but the swelling seemed to have gone down.
I took a deep breath before I knocked on the door, and I didn’t wait for a response. I pulled it open. Corey was inside, sipping a cup of coffee. I looked for Jack and saw him sitting on his bed. His shirt was off, and I saw his shoulders flex as he leaned forward.
“Jessica? Are you okay?” Corey asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I said, my eyes still locked with Jack’s.
Silence filled the room. Corey looked at Jack and then back at me. “I’ll give you two some privacy,” he said with a knowing expression. Corey grabbed his keys from the small table and carried his coffee outside. Neither Jack nor I spoke until the door closed.
“Hey,” said Jack.
“Hey. Jack, I wanted to say I’m sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean it.” I slowly walked across the room. I wanted to be closer to him. With every step I took, I felt like I was returning to earth, back to the safety of his arms.
“Jessica, you have nothing to apologize for. What happened to you wasn’t your fault. It was-“ I pressed my finger to his lips. I didn’t want to talk anymore. I climbed onto his bed, my legs straddling him. I leaned forward and kissed him deeply, life breathing back into me.
Jack’s arms wrapped around me, and I felt safe again. I felt like I belonged here, with him, forever and ever. I kissed his neck, grinding my hips against him as his fingertips moved down my back. I felt my body defy gravity as Jack lifted me up and lay me gently on the bed. My boots fell to the floor, and my pants weren’t far behind them.
Soon, he was inside of me. My legs wrapped around his waist like I would never let him go, and he brushed my hair from my face. The faster he moved his hips, the louder I moaned. I could feel him everywhere, and the sensation was overwhelming. We came together, and he laid his head on my heaving chest. I ran my fingers through his hair, and we fell asleep.
