Their plane touched down in Seattle just around 2 pm. The flight from Los Angeles was smooth, and Olivia couldn’t wait for the next few days. She was a last-minute substitute to attend the sales conference with Jake, as Brian was sick and could not attend.
This was a huge opportunity for Olivia, who recently graduated from USC with a degree in marketing. Jake and Brian were the premier sales team. They traveled all across the country and even had a few upcoming business trips to Canada. Both Jake and Brian were in their late 20s and had been rising stars within the company for the past few years.
Olivia joined the company because of the opportunities for exciting travel. The company was newer and cutting edge in the fitness industry, which matched Olivia’s athletic and sporty lifestyle. Most of the people who worked there were fit and in their 20s.
“Well, are you ready?” Jake turned to Olivia, who was sitting in the window seat, smiling and flashing his pearly whites. His piercing blue eyes were surreal, especially because you wouldn’t expect it with his dark brown hair.
“Yea, a little nervous, but yes.” Olivia smiled back at Jake, her cheek dimples showing ever so slightly.
The two unboarded the plane and headed to the baggage claim. While waiting, they made small talk. Olivia could sense that Jake was holding something back. She and Jake had become good work friends in the 3 months Olivia was with the company. They didn’t spend much time outside of work together, other than at company happy hours. After all, Olivia was in a relationship.
Olivia met Kyle in college during their sophomore year. They quickly hit it off, starting out as friends with benefits and then developing an actual romantic relationship. Kyle worked in client relations for a mid-size investment company. Despite their busy schedules, Olivia and Kyle maintained a strong, healthy relationship. After graduating six months ago, they moved into a high-rise apartment together in downtown Los Angeles. There were zero complaints, and Olivia expected Kyle would propose within the next year.

After a long and mostly quiet Uber ride from the airport, Olivia and Jake finally arrived to their hotel near downtown Seattle. They were staying in the same hotel where the three-day conference would be held. It was Wednesday, so they had the rest of the day to themselves before the conference started the next morning.
Jake handled the check-in while Olivia texted some friends about her exciting weekend ahead of her. Jake handed her a room key and told Olivia they were on the 16th floor. During the elevator ride, Jake was growing more awkward. He kept looking down at his feet and only giving half-assed smiles whenever his eyes met Olivia’s.
Once off the elevator, Jake walked down the hall to room 1638 and placed the key card over the sensor, unlocking the door and beginning to enter the room.
“So, which room is mine?” Olivia asked Jake since her card wasn’t in a sleeve with the room number.
“Yea, so the thing is, we are sharing a room. It was supposed to be me and Brian, so the company only booked one room since we’re both dudes. I tried booking a second room last night when I learned you were coming, but the hotel is booked due to the conference.” Jake stood in the doorway, making an awkward face.
“Oh. Uh, well ok.” Olivia now understood why Jake was acting so weird.
“Don’t worry, at least there’s two beds.” Jake let out a small laugh to ease the awkwardness.
“Alright, well as long as you don’t snore, we’ll be good.” Olivia smiled and momentarily placed her hand on Jake’s outer bicep as she walked past him and into the room.
Whatever awkward tension existed between Olivia and Jake would vanish by this time the next day…
