Having dragged Shawn all the way back to the guest bedroom, Lance had been grilling Doctor Feln’s secretary for almost half an hour. James occasionally interjected with a point or two, but Avi was lost in thought about their current situation.

Whether or not they could trust Feln, he held all the cards: half of the Stone of
Love, for one, and Feln was also possibly the only person in the Labyrinth who knew how to repair the two fragments should they ever be reunited.

Unrelenting, Lance continued his interrogation. “So you’re saying you never ONCE asked Feln what was in the mysterious room labelled ‘Keep Out’? It’s not like it was locked or anything. You know how obtuse you sound, right?”

Shawn threw his hands up in the air. “I don’t know how many more times I can say it: I trust Feln implicitly. I don’t have any reason not to.”

“For God’s sake, Lance,” said Avi, “why don’t you just show him the room?”

“Maybe you’re right,” said Lance. “C’mon. Let’s go see it, shall we?” He grabbed Shawn by the arm.

Avi was in too deep at this point. He really had no choice but to follow along with the other three as Lance forced Shawn back down the stairs of Feln’s complex.

Shawn’s jaw hung wide open as he looked at the three bodies hanging off the wall. “Fuck me.”

“Anything jogging your memory?” said Lance.

“No. I had no idea Feln would do something like this.” Shawn was visibly distraught.

“Can you even tell what’s happening here?” asked Wes.

Shawn shook his head. “I can’t. I’m sorry.”

Avi rested his head in his hand.

Shawn looked around, but hesitated to touch anything. Finally, he turned to Lance. “We have to do something.”

“What do we do?” said Avi, butting in. “Talk to the guy? What if he does this to us?”

“He won’t do it to me,” said Shawn.

“Are you kidding?” cried Lance. “He could replace you in an instant. He has no shortage of cute guys in need of protection down here.”

Shawn clenched his fists. “It’s more than that. You know that.”

“Let’s just relax,” said Avi. “What are our options here?”

“We could kill him,” said James. He had been silent the entire time. Avi, Lance, and Shawn all turned to look at him slowly.

“What?” said Lance.

“Seriously,” James continued. “We have everything. The Stone, the poison, what does he have? Nothing. Let’s just put the guy down before he has a chance to screw us over.”

The four of them looked at each other. Avi broke the silence after a moment. “Shawn, do you know the code to the vault?”

“Yeah, I do. One-nine-three-six.”

“Then let’s do it,” said Avi. “Sure, we owe him a lot. But it’s not worth the risk. He’s given us everything we need. We have to think for ourselves if we’re going to escape the Labyrinth. But we can only do this if all four of us are fully in.”

Avi looked to the three of them for confirmation. Lance nodded. So did James. Finally, Shawn agreed as well. “I’ve been with Doctor Feln for so long… but this isn’t excusable. He can’t use human subjects. It’s barbaric.”

It was agreed. They returned to the guest room and quickly made a plan. Shawn would meet up with Feln near the main entrance and distract him with some lab reports. Then, Avi would appear out of the woodwork with the Stone, and together with Lance and James they would pin him down. James would be the last one on scene, and would administer the poison to Feln.

Avi knew it was barbaric. But he feared for his life. He knew that if they tried to leave early, Feln would suspect something. He reassured himself that the plan was reasonable as he waited around the corner with Lance, listening to Shawn’s distraction nearby.

“Are you angry yet?” asked Lance.

“No, it doesn’t work like that,” grumbled Avi. “Just let me concentrate.”

It was late in the evening. They had told Feln they were turning in early to bed that night. Feln tended to be rather suggestible like that. He was incredibly intelligent, it seemed, but not terribly wise. What an absolute despot, Avi thought. He had so much power, so much technology, he probably could have escaped the Labyrinth by now. But instead, he was content to use tributes to his advantage, paying some for dangerous work, and abusing others for his twisted experiments.

Avi felt a warmth in his new metal necklace. The stone was working. He closed his eyes, trying hard to concentrate. He knew the anger would be self sustaining. He just had to make sure that he had enough of it.

“Well, I’ll see to it later, I guess.” Feln was almost done with Shawn.

“Time’s running out,” whispered Lance. “Let’s go!”

Avi took a deep breath. It was now or never. He turned around the corner, saw Feln facing away from him, and tackled him with a surge of Emotion Stone-driven strength.

Avi could tell that the Stone of Anger wasn’t at full strength. But it proved more than enough. Feln was on the ground before he even realized what was happening.

Shawn yelled something. But Avi couldn’t hear it. All he could really do was focus on holding the struggling Feln down as Lance and James jumped on him. The four of them each grabbed a limb of his. James had the satchel ready, in position to make the kill.

James dug through the pouch and fetched the vial, Feln screaming the entire time. He struggled hard, and as a well-built man he presented a challenge for the others, but Avi was able to hold him with no problem at all.

James held out the vial, but stopped.

“James! Just do it!” yelled Lance. But James was simply frozen, sitting atop Feln’s thrashing leg.

Suddenly, Lance tossed the glass vial back into the satchel. He instead pulled out the mind-controlling, Feln’s other gift. “Get his pants off,” said James calmly.

There was no time to argue. Avi felt himself beginning to tire. He quickly tore open Feln’s belt, and unzipped his pants to reveal a sizable bulge in his underwear. Lance pulled it down, flinging the doctor’s cock out. With no hesitation this time, James fitted the device over Doctor Feln’s semi-erect penis.

Suddenly, the struggling stopped. Feln lay completely still.

Avi waved a hand over his face, receiving no reaction. “It… it worked.”

“Can he hear us?” asked Lance.

“I can hear you,” said Feln. Avi’s heart skipped a beat.

Lance continued. “What the hell is this place?”

“This is Feln Laboratories.”

“Lance! Ask useful questions!” demanded Shawn.

“Sorry. Feln, what is the purpose of your room labelled ‘Keep Out’?”

“Testing…” Feln groaned, leaning back. They were running out of time already. Avi held the device firmly on Feln’s cock.

“Testing for what?” asked Lance, clearly losing his patience.

“A cure. I’m testing for a cure.”

“What, for the incubus kiss? A likely story. Even if that were true, why do you think it’s okay to torture innocent tributes and use them as test subjects?”

“They’re not… tortured…”

“Yes they are! They have cuts all over their bodies!” Lance was fuming. He crawled over Feln, looking the mentally paralyzed man right in the eye. “I saw it myself.”

“They’re Andromeda,” Feln said finally.

James frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Recovered Andromeda. I couldn’t save them… so I used them for their biology. I’m testing their anatomy.”

Avi and Lance looked at each other. There was no way that Feln was lying. Not under the influence of the device.

“Run,” said Lance. Avi nodded, clutching his necklace, and bolted for the door. Shit, what was the combination again?

“Two-two-five-eight!” said Lance. Avi tried it. A buzzing noise. Wrong code. He tried another one, knowing only for sure that it started with a two-two. Same result.

“James!” yelled Avi. “Ask Feln!”

“What’s the code?” said James. Feln said nothing, only groaning loudly.

“He’s waking up,” said Shawn. Avi’s face drained of colour.

“Upstairs,” said Avi. “We hide upstairs. Shawn, you stay here. I don’t know. Maybe he’ll black out and forget everything.”

“Avi, that’s not going to—” started Lance.

“We have no choice!” snapped Avi. “Fucking go. James, come with us. Upstairs.
Take the satchel.”

The three of them sprinted up the stairs. They could hear Feln awakening.

“What now?” asked a panicked Lance. “Do we hide? Do we fight him?”

“Lock the door,” said Avi. “Quickly.”

“There’s no lock.”

“Barricade it! Push a bed in front of it or something! Hang on, I need to get angry again.”

James watched helplessly as Lance shoved a bed in front of the door. Avi fingered his necklace, trying to focus on anything that might work him up again. He was already exhausted.

Eventually, the barricade was in place. The three of them hid themselves in the bathroom, just to buy extra time while Avi worked on a plan. He knew he had to finish the job. They had been wrong, but there was no telling what Feln’s wrath would be like for an attempt on his life. He closed his eyes, his necklace firmly in his hand, his other arm around James to shelter him.

Time passed. Minutes began to shift into hours. But Feln never came, at least, not while Avi was conscious.

He was unsure exactly when he fell asleep, but Avi realized his mistake of drifting off as soon as he was awake. He half-expected to wake up in some horrible instrument of torture, but indeed, he was still on the bathroom floor. In fact, both James and Lance were also asleep.

“Guys! Wake up!” Avi patted the two of them on the shoulder. “We fell asleep!”

Lance rubbed his eyes for a moment, before suddenly snapping alert. “Did… did Feln come?”

“I don’t know. Hold on, I’m gonna check it out.” Avi stood up and walked over to the guest chamber door, rubbing his necklace and searching for an anger that wasn’t really there. The bed rested in the same position, but, as if slid through the crack of the door, an envelope sat on the bed sheets.

Avi picked it up, inspecting it.

“Do you see anything?” called Lance from the bathroom.

“There’s… something here.” Avi read the outside of the envelope.

*To Avi and Company*

Avi was starting to freak out. He slowly tore open the seal as Lance and James stepped to his side to read over his shoulder.

*Today, you have betrayed my trust. I invited you into my home, provided you with all of the comforts of your old lives, and gave you the best advice that exists on how to escape the Labyrinth. And still, you chose to turn against me.*

*Shawn explained your rationale to me. Your course of action, though it was predicated on lesser betrayal of my trust and your trespassing into my incubus lab, is somewhat logical. As such, much to Shawn’s behest, I have chosen not to take any direct action against you.*

*That said, I will not be providing you with any additional help in your quest to escape the Labyrinth.*

Avi groaned. They had really fucked this up. He scrunched up the letter, continuing to read it.

“Hey! Let me read it too!” whined Lance.

*That said, you have transgressed me. I cannot allow that to go unpunished. I have triggered the alarm inside of the vault containing the Stone of Love. This has sent a direct message to the orc and incubi. At the time of writing, they are no doubt converging on my lab.*

*As for me, I am leaving this place. I may return, but for now I must rebuild my trust before I commit to helping others again. So long, Avi.*

*– Leon Feln, PhD*

Avi was in shock as he read the letter.

“Well? What does it say?” asked Lance.

“We need to get out of here,” said Avi. “Now.”
